4th of July 2015

4th of JulyThis is an important date for us all. The world seems to be falling apart around us as times are tough all over the world, but the United States still stands for freedom for so many around the world.

Here are the words inscribed on the Liberty Bell: Leviticus 25:10 and it reads,

“Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all inhabitants thereof.”

I have learned so much in the past two years. As I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer I a couple of years back, I was forced to think clearly about my life, what it has meant and what it could still mean.

Looking back I was ready to see my failures and deal with my regrets only to find that I had more blessings than I thought. I thought I was picked on in school, but I was building character and learning how to deal with how tough and sometimes ugly people can be.

I thought that the trouble I had in school with ADHD and other issues was a curse to remind me what a loser I was, but it was the kick I needed to prove to myself I could do whatever I set my mind to and although I am really bad at math, I became a math tutor in electronics engineering school and made it through. I do have to admit that my teaching did not stay with me and I still suck at math, but I got my degree and worked in the tech fields I wanted to.

I thought that my sucking at learning the guitar was all about my lack of talent. Instead I found out as I was forced to join a band and play publicly, that I did not suck at guitar as much as I was too wrapped up in getting high and partying to really devote the time to playing. Being on stage made me a much better player as I had to practice so I didn’t look like a complete fool onstage.

Learning that I was lazy and just wanted to party made me want to stop partying and start getting serious about my future. This pulled me out of a serious depression and lead me to do some wonderful things in my life for myself and a few others.

I thought my abuse and misuse of drugs in my youth was a weakness that would devour me, but instead it helped me find my weakest self and it empowered me to find my stronger self and armed me with the insight and the courage to help others going down similar paths. I am not perfect, but I am stronger and more courageous that I ever thought I was.

I met people I looked up to and then saw some of them fall and I thought what chance do I have if that person fell, but what I learned is that no one is immune to tragedy or to failure and that failure is what leads to success. So I learned that I am no less or more a success or failure than I believe I am or allow myself to be.

I thought that my diagnosis would send me into a deep depression, but found that it not send me into a why me; pity party mess, but instead I ended up being around other patients that were in much worse shape than me. I looked at the world and what was going on overseas and saw that so many people and their families are in such a worse place than me. I live in southern California for gosh sake. Not so tough a place to be.

No I had to find the place in myself where I allow myself the knowledge that life is full of tragedy, but from our greatest tragedies come our most incredible gifts. I know that I have to acknowledge the dark and fear, but that I have to focus on the gifts in the darkness. I know that I have to find the blessings in all things and be grateful everyday for my life has been so truly blessed.

I thought that I couldn’t help others until I learned how to help myself, but instead I learned that helping others and putting others ahead of myself, without expectation of a return, opened me up to see the good in others and to be more grateful for what I had.

Take this time to remember everyone that gave or fought for our freedoms and also take a moment to remember what this freedom has made you grateful for. Is it our children growing up with fresh water, food, free education, the freedom to say and think what they want? Is it the fact that they live in a country that has the ability to help other countries and people also try and attain the gifts of free will.

I was in the Navy so I could grow up, see the world and get my college paid for, but instead I got the chance to meet with a group of people that were there for each other, brothers helping brothers all to protect us and others around the world from tyranny and slavery. I am proud of my time in the military and even more proud of the men I served with.

Me with the honor guard from New Directions at the VA Center in Santa Monica, CA

Recently I stopped by a bar to see an old friend from high school. We sat at the bar to catch up and reminisce about the old days. He had stayed in the town I had grown up in, Lake Tahoe, and I had left to join the Navy.

We got into a conversation about vets and he made the remark that he didn’t get why everyone made such a big deal about vets or soldiers as they had signed up for a job and were doing it. Why did they need extra stuff or why did we see them as heroes for doing their job? Arrrrghh!

Is Alcohol More Dangerous Than Heroin, Cocaine, Meth or Marijuana?

SmokingWhat is the most dangerous, most addictive, least healthful controlled substance you can take?

I always say…. Stop telling me what is bad for me and tell me on a list of one to one thousand tell me which is the worst and I will at least stay away from the top 3 or 5 depending…. I don’t have the time or want to focus on what the 400th worst thing is for me…. Everything over moderation will kill you including water and air.

cannabis, marijuana leafI have seen two other studies this week that show that regular cannabis is not dangerous to drivers and although it shows in studies that it can impair certain functions you need to drive, it does not, in the studies conducted show the same issues with real driving tests!!??

The belief is that when you are drunk and driving you overestimate your ability to do well and thus you do stupid stuff and crash, but cannabis users usually overestimate how impaired they are and are extremely careful and use other techniques to make sure they are not doing stupid things and crashing so the studies continue to show no increase in accidents with smokers of cannabis while driving.

Alcohol, cannabis

Add alcohol to the mix and the cannabis smoker is just as susceptible to an accident as any other drunk.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2722956/

Here is another study list of most harmful to least harmful

http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/addiction/news/20101101/alcohol-more-harmful-than-crack-or-heroin

This study shows that you are not likely to become addicted to most drugs you try unless you try them intravenously or your trying cigarettes.

http://www.bakadesuyo.com/2012/08/whats-the-most-addictive-drug/

Remember none of these figures show black and white answers. Obviously more people drink alcohol that do heroin so you will have more (25% of vehicle deaths are attributed to alcohol consumption) alcohol related deaths. Drinking hard liqueur vs beer or wine might have different issues. Alcohol for example shows some positive health effects if taken in moderation. So you have to do research on the research to make sure you know if you are in harms way or not.

incarcceration rates in US and aboadWe have believed the big lies we have been told forever. It is time to start questioning everything, not as a cynic, but as a concerned citizen that is through believing the media which continues to subvert the truth allowing a failing war on drugs to fill our prisons to capacities that are not seen in any other part of the world, except Seychelles. Yes the U.S. is the number 2 winner in how many people per capita, we incarcerate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate

Drug addiction is no joke and not good for the addicted or our society. This story is just to point out the facts at hand so we can work out the issues with the best possible information at hand, not with outdated anecdotal information based on fear and corporate greed.

The Norby Walters 25th Annual Night of 100 Stars Awards Viewing Gala

February 22nd at the famous Beverly Hilton Hotel’s International Ballroom

Celebrating the 87th Annual Awards and the Walters Family 5 Oscar Nominations for WHIPLASH.

IMG_3688I have worked at or covered this event for over 4 years. It is the hottest night and the biggest red carpet, except for the Oscars themselves. Oscar night is special in Hollywood and Beverly Hills as all the stars that do not go to the Oscars come out to the viewing parties.

Norby Walters viewing party started as a card game and grew into a phenomena. It is my pleasure to be invited back again this year to cover the top star interviews for On Purpose Magazine – JW

Los Angeles – On Oscar® Sunday February 22nd, the International Ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel will provide you this new venue for the arrival of approximately 150-200  film and TV stars who will attend the hottest celebrity Awards party in town with even bigger names than last year.

The formal sit-down dinner viewing party has always included past Oscar winners and nominees who will return to pay tribute to this year’s favorite Award nominees including the Walters family’s 5 Oscar nominations for WHIPLASH (Bold Films).  Stars and their guests will be dressed to the nines in Formal fashions represented by the nations finest design houses. Various ‘fashion police’ reporters will line the red carpet doing live and taped reports.

The media has always rated the Night of 100 Stars as one of the top Award parties. The Daily News rated this party as “…the number one Oscar party, just for the sheer number of celebrities attending…”. ABC’s Good Morning America covers this party from inside and said. ” Voting Academy members flock to the Night of 100 Stars and we are here tonight with many former Oscar and Golden Globe winners. Is this an Oscar party or the Golden Globes?” The Jimmy Kimmel Show tapes segments here for the show and said, ” …a wild party with mostly celebrities and they are everywhere you look..and they have the most beautiful girls”. The Hollywood Reporter says, ” Numerous former Academy Award winners and nominees turned out Sunday during the Night of 100 Stars Oscar Gala..including (150 stars) Richard Dreyfuss, Martin Landau, Chevy Chase, Fred Willard, James Cromwell, Ron Perlman, Renee Taylor, Jason Ritter, and so many more.”

Last year over 250 + media outlets from the U.S. and nearly 50 International news outlets covered the Night of 100 Stars at our 300Ft. carpet media wall Step & Repeat.

Covered each year as an official KABC Awards Viewing Party.

The Night of 100 Stars Oscar Party is the  first  to ever stream a live show worldwide starting 10 years ago when announced by the Hollywood Reporter’s Paul Bond in a special Oscar party edition. Current years live streaming show was worldwide broadcast streamed on FoxNews.com/ Beverly Hills Courier TV and Fashion TV.

Economist Ilya Kuntsevich The World’s Economic Formulas Don’t Work

  • What’s wrong with the economic system if it breaks down now and then?
  • Should the modern economic theories, accounting principles, and financial models be relied upon going forward?
  • Could we devise an alternative economic system, which would be whole and sustainable, and allow a crisis-like proof pace of economics?
  • Could we design and build more intelligent tools and models in order to see the big picture and avoid future crises?

These are the questions tackled in Economical Equilibrium: Geometry of Economics by Ilya Vladimirovich Kuntsevich.

Happy 4th of July – Fun Declaration of Independence Facts

Happy Fourth of July….

It is the day we celebrate our independence with the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

pic declaration of independenceThere is some debate and mystery to when the actual document was signed as far as we know the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia on the 1st of July, and voted in favor of independence and then after many rewrites, the agreed upon document was written and signed by a few of the signers, then a few were printed, on July the fourth of 1776.

Several copies were printed on the 5th of July and were sent out to the 13 colonies, local officials and to the troops.

There is quite a bit of debate about exactly when everyone signed. All the signatures of the Declaration of Independence we now have were put on the document from the 4th of July and many on the 19th and then more after August 2nd of 1776.

Imagine a little bird sitting on top of an antique typewriter, a classic book, or an Amati violin.

How can a painting tell a story through an unusual combination of objects that invoke a fond memory with appeal?  When people look at my current series of oil paintings, they often ask “Why the birds?”

On Purpose Magazine Has Moved and Is Growing

cropped-header-opm-trans1.png

On Purpose Magazine has moved to a more robust platform and is getting ready for a face lift.

You should not notice any differences in the look and feel of On Purpose Magazine, but there has been a major change recently.

On Purpose Magazine was originally hosted with WordPress.com and is now running WordPress.org.

I know this doesn’t sound like much to most of us, but to the techies and website gurus out there, this is a major change.

What it means is that we now have more room to grow and expand usability for our readers.

Keep your eyes peeled for some big changes coming soon, but for now we will continue to produce the best and most interesting content we can.

Memorial Day 2013

Memorial Day BannerIn the  past I have spent my Memorial weekend with Walk for Warriors in Los Angeles, CA to honor vets and their families. This year due to some health issues I can not make it, but I do want to let everyone know about it.

Also if you have a special place you go or some great cause or organization you believe needs support please mention them here!

I have found that most veterans do not know what is available out there and there actually is a fair amount of third party resources for vets in need.

I found this on the Internet and thought it was good to check out as a country we need to make Memorial Day and Veterans Day count. JW

Hostgator 50% Off Sale Memorial Day Weekend

logo hostgatorHostgator is having a 50% Off sale for their hosting product which is well known as one of the best and fastest hosting solutions for WordPress.org.

If you are looking to move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org anytime soon then this is the time to buy a 3 year hosing plan at 50% off.

Here is my buddies affiliate link

http://secure.hostgator.com/~affiliat/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=bobschecter

This is will help you and him. Bob is one of my best friends and tech mentors. If you just want to skip this link and go to Hostgator.com then you can do that also. There is also a toll free number you can call 866-964-2867 and I found that Edson at ext 817637 was quite helpful. Ordering off the site is easy so you do not need to call in, but if you need to speak to someone then the toll free is great support.

Also there are some addons. I cannot help you here. I did get the backup feature, but left out the rest. It is up to you. Can’t help you here. If you are selling on your site and want to take credit card information then you probably want the security addon as it gives pci certification. If you use Paypal or other vendor you may not need this feature.

Why am I sending this out? I wanted to move for some time as WordPress.org is so much more powerful, but you need to know when to get the best bang for your buck and the 50% off does not come around too often.

For those moving to WP.org what is the downside? There is a lot more maintenance to deal with, but I believe the power and usability make up for that if you are willing.

Stand Up To Cancer — Come as You Are: Living in Stage Four

Come as You Are: Living in Stage Four

Posted on June 10, 2013, 7:45 AMCome as You Are: Living in Stage Four
Reblooged from Stand Up To Cancer Blog

By Mary Elizabeth Williams

Everybody loves a winner. And when I first got cancer, I was such a winner. I had faced a malignant melanoma diagnosis, a difficult, permanently scarring surgery, and a painful recovery with flying colors. I was, both friends and strangers alike told me admiringly, a “survivor.” Then a year later I was rediagnosed. Metastatic this time. Stage Four. And suddenly I wasn’t a winner any more.

Growing up, I was always the kid picked last in gym class, the one nobody really wanted on their teams. When I got Stage Four cancer, it was a lot like that. I wasn’t the popular survivor any more. I wasn’t a feel good champion of pluck and survival. Some of my friends looked awkwardly at their feet when I came into the room. Others told me – with great authority – that I just needed a positive attitude and I could beat this thing. Some flat out dumped me. It was a lonely, weird place. But you know who needs a team most? It’s not the popular kid. It’s the scared, lonely one in the back. I never needed help and support and basic kindness more than I when I was at Stage Four, and yet I never felt more invisible. And almost as deep as my fear of the cancer that was growing within my body was the profound sense that I had somehow let everybody down. That I was a disappointment.

Fortunately, soon after my devastating news, I joined a local cancer support group. Even before my first meeting, I knew it was the right place for me because of its simple four word slogan. “Come as you are.” There, it didn’t matter that I was Stage Four, that my odds were slim. There, I didn’t feel like I was on death row, I wasn’t a failure in my personal version of “Survivor: Cancer Island.” In my support group, I could just come as I was, every week, with no expectations, no performance anxiety.

People with metastatic cancer tend to be ignored in the public discourse of cancer. We don’t fit the profile of the upbeat warrior, triumphant and bald. And so, we often remain unseen. Mysterious. Definitely a little spooky. I certainly didn’t know much about what the terrain was like until I found myself on it. All I knew was that it had to very, very bad for there to be no Stage 5. And so, when my oncologist told me I was Stage Four, I was, unsurprisingly……………
