I have been following Duke Long and his blog for a few years now. I was Googling Commercial Real Estate sites and found a list of the top 25 social media people in the industry.

I looked up and down the list and searched it for my name. I found my co-partner on my CREPIG site and many of my site members, but not my name.

I was disappointed and made a mental note to make sure that this Duke guy recognized me and put me on the list. Well the list was done so I put myself on it in the comments section.

Duke wrote back saying essentially cool man… No prob. I kept a keen eye on his lists since then and I have rarely made any of them.

Duke and I have spoken several times over the years and we finally got to meet each other and hang out at NAR together. We actually had a great time hanging out and got to talk at length about many subjects.

Duke is going where most other CRE professionals do not dare with social media and blogging and he does have an attitude, which he share via his blog…. Listen in as we take a moment to chat about the industry and new media challenges. – JW

The audio Interview was done before Jay Jay’s talk from his office in New York. The video was taken at the conference after he had spoken to an excited group of entrepreneurs and business people.

I went to Steve Farber’s first ever Extreme Leaership Summit and now that it is over I can tell you it was a major success. NO Pitchfest, pure training, learning, networking and awesome entertainment. The message was important and Steve used his famous L.E.A.P. system to guide and help make the summit a wonderful experience. It was filled with speakers that taught Love of your business, client, worker and your product or service. It had speakers like Jay Jay French from Twisted Sister that were incredibly Energetic and Audacious and speakers like Simon Billsberry to give Proof of concept and implementation.

It was hard to get Jay Jay away from the throng of people that wanted his attention, but he stayed for the whole three days and made himself extremely available to the attendees. I grabbed him while he was signing autographs and got into the nitty gritty with him about his first talk on stage and about the music business and how what he learned creating one of the most successful bands in the history of rock, can help you and your business.

I loved Steve’s book so I knew the summit would be good, but I did not expect great and I got great. One night Steve and Jay Jay set it up so that Guitar Center and Epiphone Guitar supplied us with masses of instruments and a drum kit and we all got to go and play up on stage with Jay Jay. What a super honor. I played bass behind a couple of tunes… very cool. – JW

This was written before the summit.

After speaking to Steve Farber, recently about his first ever Extreme Leadership Summit, I could see that this was going to be one of those life changing experiences that we just do not find in most conferences and summits nowadays.

Steve is cool enough, but he also offered to allow his speakers to interview with me before the event….  Great for me because, although I don’t do commercials or infomercials for people, I do love to create and share excellent and valuable content for you, and Steve and the speakers promised they would tell some cool stories and give me some great content and value to pass on to you. (And They Have!.. )

It is also great for Steve so that he can get the word out on this unbelievable summit. Steve has put together an Extreme Training Intensive… This is not another one of those sellathon weekends where speakers pitch you to buy at the back of the room…

Steve has brought his closest friends that have excelled in Extreme Leadership and he brings them to you so that you can learn what you need to know to accelerate your business and your life to never before foreseen heights.

I heard that Jay Jay and Steve had met at Liz Strauss’ SOBCon Event and was happy to hear that Jay Jay would be speaking at Steve’s Extreme Leadership Summit.

As a musician myself and a guitar player at that, it was sure exciting to get to speak with Jay Jay French the guitarist for the legendary Twisted Sister.

Jay Jay tells a great story and is quite candid and I found that there was really no question he was not willing to answer.

The big thing we discussed was how similar the music business is to other industries and how it takes the same qualities and systems and steps to place preparation into the path of opportunity.

Jay Jay, is a rock star that plays guitar in front of 70 to 80 thousand screaming fans at huge arenas and stadiums, but as the founder and also the manager of the band and others, Jay Jay is also a very savvy businessman, an entrepreneur and someone that has paid some dues.

Never thought I would say that some of the smartest business information I got came from a rock guitarist from a band with a name like Twisted Sister.

I want to thank Jay Jay for his time, for being a great guest and for spending some substantial time with me right after getting off his European Tour… Thanks Jay Jay. – JW

Jay Jay French’s Pinkburst Project Donates Over $110,000 to The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation

A total of $110,000 is being donated to The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation for ongoing research, education and support for those affected by Uveitis and other inflammatory eye diseases.

All custom guitars and amps in The Pinkburst Project collection were auctioned for sale during the Skinner Fine Musical Instruments on Sunday, May 1, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.

A benefit concert, “The Pinkburst Project: An Evening with Twisted Sister benefiting the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation” took place on Friday, April 29 at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square. Special guests included New York Yankee-great, Bernie Williams.

“When I embarked on the Pinkburst Project three and one-half years ago on behalf of my daughter Samantha and her struggle with her Uveitis, I did it at first to raise much needed money for research and a cure. I didn’t realize where that journey would take me.” stated French.

He continued, “The money raised of course is much needed but the media exposure and the realization that getting out the story could actually save people’s sight was something that I didn’t think about. Now I have come to realize that the combination of hard work, focus and the incredible help from so many people have created a social network of families who are fighting this disease and no longer feel like nobody in the world cares. People DO care.

The brotherhood of man has once again reached out to those in need and now the Pinkburst Project has given renewed hope to those afflicted that someday a cure may be found.”

I have to admit I had never heard of Brian Mayne until he was mentioned to me by Steve Farber, but what a treat he is.

I sat on the phone listening to Brian tell me about his past as a literal gypsy who did not learn to read or write till age 30! Then he wrote four, count them, four, very well received books. Amazing!

But what is more amazing is this formally illiterate gypsy devises a system of goal setting and achievement that rivals any system I have seen by far, and I have seen a few.

Warren Carlos Sapp (born December 19, 1972) is a former American college and professional football player who was defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for thirteen seasons. He played college football for the University of Miami Hurricanes, was recognized as a consensus All-American and won multiple awards. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1995 NFL Draft as the 12th overall pick, and played professionally for the Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders of the NFL. He spent nine seasons with the Buccaneers where he earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl and a Super Bowl ring in 2002. He moved to the Raiders in 2004.

His 96.5 career sacks (100 counting the playoffs) are the second-highest career total sacks for a defensive tackle and the 28th highest overall for a defensive lineman. His 77 sacks with the Buccaneers is second in the team’s history.

In 2002, Sapp helped lead a resurgent Tampa Bay team to victory in Super Bowl XXXVII over the Oakland Raiders. Sapp had five tackles and two sacks during the 2002-2003 postseason, and was an instrumental staple in the league leading Buccaneers defense.

It was my delight to see Liz Strauss walk into the Green Room at Blogworld 2011. I had the pleasure of picking her up at the airport for here visit to the event, but had not seen her since leaving her at her hotel.

She is always pretty busy. Liz gave me a Liz moment and then introduced me to Steve Farber. I had heard of Steve, but was not that familiar with his work. Liz told me straight away that not only did I need to read his book, but I really needed to interview him.

I don’t know if it is possible to say no to Liz as I have never tried, but this was not the time I was going to test anything out. I met Steve and we started talking. I immediately realized this was someone I needed to talk to.

Not my best interview since I did not know the subject matter that well, but Steve was more that delightful. He was sharp and to the point, fun and entertaining and at the same time very serious about his message.

I have since started reading Steve’s book and it is definitely going to reside on the important shelf in my library.

The Roxy Owner Nic Alder Receives an Excellance Award for Social Media Marketing


The Gravity Summit at UCLA awarded Nic Adler an award at for Excellence in Social Media Marketing.

It was opened on September 23, 1973 by Elmer Valentine and Lou Adler along with original partners David Geffen, Elliot Roberts and Peter Asher. They took over building previously occupied by a strip club owned by Chuck Landis called the Largo. talks to us after his speech at the 2012 Gravity Summit UCLA where he spoke mainly about how he uses Twitter to stay in touch with fans.
Warren has over 780,000 followers on Twitter and he is very active answering questions and talking to his fan base.

Warren Sapp received the Gravity Summit Award for Excellence in Social Media as he is one of the sports industries leaders in how he uses social media to keep in touch with fans and to market his projects and products.

Other winners of this award were Janina Gavankar, who plays Luna on “True Blood” and Nic Alder, owner and manager of the famed Roxy Nightclub in Hollywood, California.

Warren kept the crowd laughing with his great stories and signature smile as he accepted the award and then he spent the evening saying hello, taking pictures with his fans and watching the plethora of professionals in entertainment and sports social media give panel discussions on the state of social media, how they use it now and how they will be expanding this new media in all aspects of building fan community and marketing channels for their projects and products.

It was a fun interview, mainly because Warren is fun and a real warm a real hearted guy, though, I am sure there are some quarterbacks out there that would disagree. – JW

Warren Carlos Sapp (born December 19, 1972) is a former American college and professional football player who was defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for thirteen seasons. He played college football for the University of Miami Hurricanes, was recognized as a consensus All-American and won multiple awards. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1995 NFL Draft as the 12th overall pick, and played professionally for the Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders of the NFL. He spent nine seasons with the Buccaneers where he earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl and a Super Bowl ring in 2002. He moved to the Raiders in 2004.

His 96.5 career sacks (100 counting the playoffs) are the second-highest career total sacks for a defensive tackle and the 28th highest overall for a defensive lineman. His 77 sacks with the Buccaneers is second in the team’s history.

In 2002, Sapp helped lead a resurgent Tampa Bay team to victory in Super Bowl XXXVII over the Oakland Raiders. Sapp had five tackles and two sacks during the 2002-2003 postseason, and was an instrumental staple in the league leading Buccaneers defense.

Tears for Fears are an English pop/rock band formed in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith.

Social Media Week Here We Go!

What is Social Media?
And Why does it have it’s own week?

Social Media Week started here in Los Angeles at the vLounge in Santa Monica, CA. A very noisy networking mixer of social media gurus, marketers, networkers and media experts.

Social Media is a term that is a bit hard to define by many of the professionals in the field. Are we talking about the media itself, word, video, audio, graphics? Are we talking about networking, marketing? Social media as a term, seems to now encompass the complete realm of web collaboration; social networking, social marketing and social media…

I just found out about SMW from my new friend Rey Ybarra. Thanks Rey. I do not have the whole scoop yet, but I have a week to figure it all out.

What I got from the opening party was that this event is going on simultaneously in the following countries and that it is the second year for the event.

Guests at last nights event were a very diverse set of social media experts and others that need social media help. Many I spoke to that had been to last years event, thought that last years event was good and this years is already better and the newbies to the event seemed to have clear goals to network and work at forming alliances and JV’s.

Others just want to know more about the where, what and why of social media.

Social Media – We Have Come a Long Way From Bulletin Boards

Bulletin Board BBSIn the late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s we had Bulletin Boards (BBS) and that essentially was the Internet. You could chat (multiple phone lines), upload and download files and mail messages. If you sent a message from California to New York; it could get there in 3 days or 4 or 5 or more depending on the BBSes you were sending them through. The BBS was run by a system operator who was officially called the SysOp and his job was the building and daily maintenance, which was a full time job. Uploading a file could take hours and so you had to wait in queue, The whole thing was buggy and highly technical and cumbersome at best. It was the high tech of the day, but we were always striving to do more faster and easier.

I had the opportunity to work with the now famous D&D VIP Dataexchange as a CoSysop. I was just learning and my teacher and mentor Doug Luce was a pro who knew the ropes and worked very hard to make sure his members were serviced. We also had hackers then and we had to run watchdog programs to keep things safe. It seems it was fun for some to get into your member or chat database and wipe it out?

Now we have an open architecture that allows us to send email around the world in seconds, upload and download huge files in no time. As the founder of a couple of social media sites I find that we still spend too much time maintaining, marketing, seeding, taking care of complaints, checking links, SEO, paypal, building, changing, educating ourselves on a continuing moving learning curve.

Maybe it is not so different?

Bulletin boards are long gone, most of them, I believe…. but it is possible that Social Media is more like the early cell phone, microwave oven or fax machine. We know they existed, but did not know if they were right for us and our business. Then more and more people had them and we realized we needed them too. So we got them and really didn’t know what to do with them…. Now we can’t live without them….. So Social Media is here to stay, whether you understand it or not and the early adopters will be the winners.

I will start putting out layman tips, tricks and observations to help you along with SEO, Social Media, Social Marketing and whatever else pops up.
