The NBA Season is Almost Here

It’s been a while since we were all watching the Miami Heat being crowned NBA champions in last year’s NBA finals. Now the time has come for the NBA to start up again. Most of you reading this are probably Laker or Clipper fan’s and most of you were probably disappointed that your team did not win it all last year.

The Lakers this off season acquired some huge offensive threats. Dwight Howard and Steve Nash look to help Kobe and Pau win it all this year. Many would say the Lakers are a strong contender this year but no one really knows how Dwight Howard will play after coming off of back surgery. Steve Nash may be up there in age but is still ready to ball most people up. So will the Lakers be a strong contender for the title this season? We will all find out soon enough.

The Los Angeles Clippers also acquired some huge weapons this season. They signed Lamar Odom former Clipper and Laker and also Grant Hill. Lamar Odom looks to bounce back after a disappointing season with the Dallas Mavericks last year. The Clippers need him to play like the 6’th man of the year like he did with the Lakers. Grant Hill is an incredible shooter who brings great experience and leadership abilities to this young team. Who knows the Clippers might be a strong contender also for the title.

Well folks there you have it. The NBA is just around the corner and your teams are looking to win it all this year. What an exciting season this is going to be. Enjoy it while it lasts because in a blink of an eye the regular season will be over and it will be Playoffs time.  -BEAR

Chris Paul has surgery on thumb

Chris Paul point guard for the Los Angeles Clippers underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb.

Paul’s injury occurred last month in Las Vegas during Team USA’s training camp. Tuesday the surgery was preformed by Dr. Steven Shin a hand specialist at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles.

Approximately 8 weeks is the amount of time Paul is expected to miss which would mean that he most likely would return for the Clippers opener Oct. 31 against Memphis. –BEAR

Chargers loose Ryan Matthews 4-6 weeks

Starting running back Ryan Matthews will undergo surgery Friday morning for a broken collarbone.

On his first carry of the preseason in the first quarter against the Packers Matthews suffered a broken collarbone. Matthews is undergoing surgery Friday morning and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

This is going to be a huge loss for the San Diego Chargers. Matthews ran for 1,091 yards and 6 touchdowns last season. Now Matthews is most likely to miss the beginning of the Season and when he returns we don’t no if he will be the same. He might never be the same and this could affect the Chargers greatly.

USA Basketball barely gets things done!

Team USA struggles against Lithuania only winning the game by 5 points. This was the first game team USA was actually tested.

Just days after winning their game by 83 points the U.S. was forced to play a possession-for-possession game in the fourth quarter in a 99-94 win over Lithuania.

LeBron James in the final four minutes of the game scored 9 of USA’s 20 points. James led his team to victory and sealed Lithuania’s fate. Hopefully USA stays dominant and will not have another close call like this one.      –Bear

Michael Phelps wins 16th career gold

Michael Phelps wins his 16th career gold medal while handing Ryan Lochte a double disappointment on his rival’s final night in the pool.

Thursday Phelps became the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at 3 straight olympics, capturing the 200-meterindividual medley for his 20th career medal and 16th gold.

Phelps has now won 2 golds and 2 silvers in 5 races. Not exactly up to his Beijing standards, but a fitting capper to a brilliant career that still has 2 more events to go.

O.J. Murdock dies in apparent suicide

Titans reserve receiver O.J. Murdock has died of an apparent suicide.

O.J. had not attended training camp over the weekend because of what the team said at the time was a personal issue. Monday Morning 25-year-old Murdock was found inside his car with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The car was parked in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock attended school. This is a very sad thing that happened and my thoughts and prayers go out to Murdock’s family.

Poor Penn State

Dear Fans,

The NCAA came out with its punishment for Penn State.

The first thing was a 60 million sanction. They received a four year bowl ban. All of their wins dating back to the 1998 season have been taken away.

Penn State also must reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period. As you can see the Nittany Lions were absolutely crushed today and have no idea how they are going to handle things from here on out.

It is sad to see for the players on the team although it was needed for what they had done. Hopefully the punishment Penn State has received will set an example on what not to do for other teams.

I met Boo Boo Stewart the GBK Events Gifting Suite for the 2012 Golden Globes, as he was walking around helping support the various presenters and causes.

I wanted more time with Boo Boo to talk about the Twilight Sagas, his music and new projects, but got rushed a bit.

Boo Boo was very nice and we so appreciate all he and his sister Fivel is doing for Childhelps.org. Child Abuse is a very serious matter and five children die in the U.S. every day due to child abuse. Please find out how you can help too. – JW

Child Help

The story of Childhelp is about two young Hollywood actresses’ “chance” encounters—one with 11 homeless orphans abroad, and one with Nancy Reagan—and how they led to a lifelong commitment to helping children in need.

The Childhelp Story

Yvonne (left) and Sara – 1959

The Beginning of a Lifetime Commitment to Children…

Eleven half-American, half-Japanese orphans wandering homeless in Tokyo following a typhoon sparked a mission that has spanned internationally for nearly 50 years and impacted the lives of millions of children.

Hollywood actresses Sara Buckner (O’Meara) and Yvonne Lime (Fedderson) first met on the set of The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, when they played the girlfriends of Ricky and David Nelson. Their mission for children began in 1959 when they were sent on a government-sponsored goodwill tour to visit troops in Japan.  Read More………

Child Abuse in America

Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Every year 3.3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving 6 million children; that’s because reports can include multiple children. The United States has the worst record in the industrialized nation – losing five children every day due to abuse-related deaths.

What is Child Abuse

Although there are many formal and acceptable definitions of child abuse, the following is offered as a guide for information on child abuse and neglect.

Child abuse consists of any act of commission or omission that endangers or impairs a child’s physical or emotional health and development. Child abuse includes any damage done to a child which cannot be reasonably explained and which is often represented by an injury or series of injuries appearing to be non-accidental in nature.

Forms of Child Abuse

Physical abuse

Any non-accidental injury to a child. This includes hitting, kicking, slapping, shaking, burning, pinching, hair pulling, biting, choking, throwing, shoving, whipping, and paddling.

Sexual abuse

Any sexual act between an adult and child. This includes fondling, penetration, intercourse, exploitation, pornography, exhibitionism, child prostitution, group sex, oral sex, or forced observation of sexual acts.

Neglect

Failure to provide for a child’s physical needs. This includes lack of supervision, inappropriate housing or shelter, inadequate provision of food and water, inappropriate clothing for season or weather, abandonment, denial of medical care and inadequate hygiene.

Emotional abuse

Any attitude or behavior which interferes with a child’s mental health or social development. This includes yelling, screaming, name-calling, shaming, negative comparisons to others, telling them they are “bad, no good, worthless” or “a mistake.” It also includes the failure to provide the affection and support necessary for the development of a child’s emotional, social, physical and intellectual well-being. This includes ignoring, lack of appropriate physical affection (hugs), not saying “I love you,” withdrawal of attention, lack of praise and lack of positive reinforcement.

What do I do if I think someone is abusing a child?

If a child discloses that he or she has been abused by someone, it is important that you LISTEN to them most of all.

  • Ask ONLY four questions
  • What happened?
  • Who did this to you?
  • Where were you when this happened?
  • When did this happen?
Asking any additional questions may contaminate a case!

DO NOT

  • Investigate
  • Ask leading questions (a question that suggests the answer or contains the information the questioner is looking for – That man touched you, didn’t he?)
  • Make promises
  • Notify the parents or the caretaker

DO

  • Provide a safe environment (be comforting, welcoming, and a good listener)
  • Tell the child it was not his/her fault
  • Listen carefully
  • Document the child’s exact quotes
  • Be supportive, not judgmental
  • Know your limits
  • Tell the truth

If you suspect abuse, but a child has not disclosed to you, call 1-800-4-A-CHILD. Or counselors can talk through the situation with you and help decide what the best course of action is.

NBA Finals tied 1-1

Dear Fans,

First of all I have to say this series that we are watching the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. the Miami Heat is one of the best NBA Finals match-ups that we will probably ever see.

The series is tied up so far at 1 a piece. In the two games so far both teams have played really tough and Miami has come out strong at the beginning taking demanding leads. In game 1 Kevin Durant lead his team through a difficult come back and got the job done . The final score was 105-94 OKC.

Durant finished with 36 points while LeBron James finished with 30.  In game 2 of the NBA Finals Durant was no able to quite lead his team all the back from a difficult deficit in which the Heat came out on top 100-96.

Both James and Durant finished with 32 points. Now the series goes over to Miami for 3 straight games where the Heat have the opportunity to finish things out at home. It is going to be tough for the Thunder but i think they will be a-ok. ~ Bear

Matt Cain throws a Perfect Game

Last night was a very special night for Matt Cain

Image

Matt Cain, starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants and the sellout crowd of 42,298 fans cheering him on. Last night Cain made history throwing his first ever Perfect Game.

This was the only Perfect Game thrown in San Francisco’s history and just the 22’nd ever thrown Perfect Game. Cain pitched 125 pitches of pure greatness and struck out 14 batters a career high for himself.

There were two close plays that had Cain holding his breath. First was a deep fly ball in the sixth inning hit by Chris Synder in which right fielder Melky Cabrera chased it down and made a leaping catch at the wall.

Second was another deep fly ball hit by Jordan Schafer in the seventh which seemed absolutely impossible that right fielder Gregor Blanco was going to be able to make a play on that ball.

Well he did alright in extraordinarily fashion. He ran so far so fast and made an incredible diving catch to get the out and keep Cain’s hopes alive. After that play it was smooth sailing from there on out for Cain completing not only his first perfect game but the 1’st ever in the Giants franchise’s history. ~ Bear
