John L. Perdue Announced as Art Quench Gallery’s 2012 October Landscape Competition Winner

John L. Perdue Announced Winner of The 2012 ” October Landscape”  Competition by Art Quench Magazine

Small Lake John L. Perdue

Title; Small lake

Art Quench Competition Juror; Monica Hicks…

The clarity and intensity of his images are really captivating. The landscapes feel visceral and I can imagine that there is some digital enhancements, which I like. If not, I still appreciate his work. The still-ness of water and the frozen clouds in the the atmosphere are so…calming.  This is work that quiets the soul.

More on John…

The photography bug caught me about 1972 with the purchase of a used, yet quality 35mm SLR. Within three years photography courses from two institutions had been completed.

Multiple workshops on lighting and darkroom technique followed, and then an apprenticeship in portraiture. With an enlistment expired it was off to home and college. Photography provided an income by producing portraits, slides for commercial use, advertisements, and prints of real estate, all processed in my darkroom. When the business world called, photography became a passionate hobby for many years.

The switch to digital happened in 2000. All the basics of photography that served so well with film became just as relevant with digital. After many dollars in equipment and many hours of training, the digital image became an art form developing in the computer.

Photographers still paint with light but now process the images in the computer instead of the darkroom. When an image during processing becomes a scene that is harmonious in color and form, pleasant to the eye, and striking in the mind, it becomes art instead of just a photograph. Some of my images are very real with great detail, some are surreal portraying an emotion.

All have been heavily processed requiring many hours of work. All are intended to be a pleasant viewing experience for you.  I sincerely hope that you thoroughly enjoy viewing my work as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Robyn Graham is Announced Winner of Art Quench 2012 “Things I Am Thankful For” Art Competition

image001Art Quench Announces The 2012 “Things I Am Thankful For” Competition Winner; Robyn Graham

Robyn grew up in a small town in Southern Illinois. At the time Robyn lived there, the population of Nashville was approximately 3,000 people.  Nashville was a quiet farming community located 60 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri.  Robyn’s parents and grandparents took advantage of the proximity and often took Robyn and her three sisters into the city for day trips to the Zoo, the Theater, the Art Museum, and other activities.

image001Robyn’s love for photography began at a very young age.  She loved to take photographs and capture events and special times with friends and family.  One of her favorite memories related to photography was using her parents’ Polaroid camera and taping all of the pictures up on a dining room cabinet door to display them.

Further influencing Robyn’s love for photography, were two local award-winning photographers.  Steve Humphrey is a portrait and wedding photographer still working in Nashville, Illinois. In addition to Steve, was Charlie Palek, also a portrait and wedding photographer whose portfolio includes landscapes, events, and images from his travels.     True inspirations.

image001Despite her love for photography, Robyn chose a career in pharmacy.  A neighbor and local pharmacist influenced this decision.  She attended St. Louis College of Pharmacy and graduated with a doctorate degree in 1995.   Robyn’s husband John also has a career in pharmacy, which brought the couple and their three children to historic Bucks County, the landscape of much of Robyn’s inspiration.

image001What draws Robyn to photography?  Other than capturing life, the art form.  Her mother is an artist – she paints.  Robyn’s father was a master craftsman in woodworking.  Two of her sisters have artistic vision and talent and can draw and paint.  Another sister writes beautiful poetry.  Art and faith have always been influential in their family life.

Robyn’s philosophy on photography is about taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary; about capturing life and life’s events; documenting special moments and visions.  For the majority of her life photography was a hobby.  More recently, with the birth of her children, photography became a passion.  In 2010 she took the necessary steps to further develop her skills in, and knowledge of, the world of photography.   She enrolled in classes and with the support of her loving husband and family was able to make the transition from passionate amateur to professional photographer.  Her career took root with the publication of her blog, Robyn Graham Photography.com through the sharing of her art and passion.

Today, Robyn is very thankful for the encouragement and support of family and friends and feels exceptionally blessed and humbled by being able to call herself an award-winning photographer.

Monica HicksThis acrylic was chosen by Art Juror Monica Hicks www.monicaelayne.com. She chose Halaburda’s first work. “It speaks to urban sprawl. The abstraction of survival, cityscapes as seen from above. I like that it’s acrylic but has the feeling of the uncontrollable watercolor. The layers of paint, the application of the washed, translucency, and vividness reminds me of Mark Bradford multimedia works.

Halaburba’s work is both beautiful, abstract, political, and has both visual and intellectual depth.”

Through light we find our spirituality and it is key to a peaceful  journey. I chose to use a symbol of energy to represent the greatest form of light that exists.  Joy is within us all when we see deeper than the outer shell. And although we have imperfections, the spirit within us is what gives us our perfection. – Stacia Gates

Stacia Gates is the founder of ArtQuench Artist Gallery and Juried Art Contest Site. She is also the founder of ArtQuench Magazine.

Stacia Gates has worked in Hollywood helping kids and others get interviewed for movies and commercial roles. Stacia has also worked with me on some of my more important shoots as she is an accomplished photographer.

Philippe Halaburda

Philippe Halaburda lives currently near Aix-en-provence in France. As an artist, Philippe paints on many different supports developing his personal style using acrylic paints, as well as textures and other mediums. His art can be found in collections, homes and offices throughout Europe, North America, Canada, and Australia.

“I am born in 1972 in Meaux in France. I studied Graphic Design in Paris and graduated in 1996 with an honors degree. I have developed my own style of painting since then. My paintings inhabit the border between figuration and abstraction. They are also in a constant state of flux and suggest different things to different people. I see them as a springboard for the imagination. Lines, shapes and paint stains can suggest me some things I would never consciously designed one.

I begin by making random marks on the canvas with a paper pencil or a brush, without any preconceived ideas at all of what the finished work is going to look like. The accidents and chance are used to provide the starting point for each artwork.

The subjects I choose to develop, the supports I paint on, the colours I use – all these things are inevitably a product of my own environment, experience and my memories. The painting is complete when there is no more need to change.

I wish that my paintings have a real presence, they magnify the space, own it.
When I begin a new painting, I never know what will be my creating composition. I discover along the way and try to be my own audience. I put myself in danger, out of balance, to keep my mind opened, in search of this thread suspended over the void. To further accentuate this state, I always start by painting several media simultaneously.

This is what I call «series». I have always worked like this. They define them by the dominant colors, more or less the distribution of space charge, the first brush stroke, sometimes the choice of words and especially the support chosen. This influenced my artistic approach. I see a critical access to other treatments of color and form, an opportunity for renewal while enhancing the contours of my artistic identity.

The brush stroke is unexpected, strong, ripped, working in different ways and with different materials. I use simple techniques often some improvisation and confusion for me but very logical. I sometimes overlapping, multiple layers of paint, volunteers to cross the lines, to boil the tracks, giving false directions, with the ultimate goal of allowing multiple approaches to the table.”
