Los Angeles Dodgers aquire OF Shane Victorino

The Los Angeles Dodgers have aquired OF Shane Victorino from the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Dodgers just seem to keep building their team up better and better by the day. The Dodgers only had to give up pitcher Josh Lindblom and a minor league pitcher.

The Dodgers now have an outfield consisting of All Star Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and Shane Victorino. That is one hell of an outfield. Dodgers just got Hanley Ramirez recently and now Victorino. Those are 2 big bats to help the line-up out.

Lets see if the Dodgers will really make a strong push towards the playoffs. They are tied for first place with the Giants right now. With their new outfielder Victorino they might just breeze on throughout the rest of the season and are now a strong World Series contender. – Bear

O.J. Murdock dies in apparent suicide

Titans reserve receiver O.J. Murdock has died of an apparent suicide.

O.J. had not attended training camp over the weekend because of what the team said at the time was a personal issue. Monday Morning 25-year-old Murdock was found inside his car with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The car was parked in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock attended school. This is a very sad thing that happened and my thoughts and prayers go out to Murdock’s family.

Poor Penn State

Dear Fans,

The NCAA came out with its punishment for Penn State.

The first thing was a 60 million sanction. They received a four year bowl ban. All of their wins dating back to the 1998 season have been taken away.

Penn State also must reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period. As you can see the Nittany Lions were absolutely crushed today and have no idea how they are going to handle things from here on out.

It is sad to see for the players on the team although it was needed for what they had done. Hopefully the punishment Penn State has received will set an example on what not to do for other teams.

Justin Blackmon not making a good name for himself

Dear Fans,

Justin Blackmon wide receiver for the Jacksonville Jaguars pleaded guilty to drunken driving in Oklahoma in a deal that avoids jail time. Blackmon was arrested during a traffic stop in Stillwater, Okla., on June 3’rd. A breath test showed his blood-alcohol content to be three times the legal limit. Judge Michael Stano imposed a deferred sentence of one year, meaning Blackmon will serve no jail time if he fulfills the terms of his sentence. The terms are he was fined $500 and must complete 50 hours of community service. Blackmon is one of five remaining unsigned first-round picks. As of now Blackmon is not on the right path and is not setting himself up for a good NFL career. This could now cause major problems with himself and the Jaguars. Hopefully he will realize that this was a stupid mistake and wont let anything like this happen again.

Surfrider Foundation

The Surfrider Foundation

MISSION

A little over 25 years ago three people in Malibu, California found out that their favorite wave was about to be destroyed. Think about that for a second.

Think about something you love… something that gives you enjoyment. Taken away.

First Point, pictured to the right, the quintessential perfect California wave was about to be destroyed. Those three people organized and worked with the local municipalities until they were satisfied that their efforts to preserve that iconic wave would be successful.

This was the genesis of Surfrider Foundation.

Today, we are doing this same thing in about 18 countries around the world.

Our mission is the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.

You can think about that as three concepts. “Protection and enjoyment”, we don’t want to put a velvet rope around a beach and tell people to keep off. We’re surfers, we’re beach goers, we’re watermen… we enjoy the coasts. We’re a user group. Next up is “oceans, waves and beaches.” Think coastlines, we’re engaged with environmental issues that affect our coastlines. “Powerful activist network” speaks to how we go about this mission. We are a grassroots organization. We’re local in many coastal regions.

We’re moms, we’re surfers, we’re kids and teens… we’re you. We’re engaged to protect what we love: oceans, waves and beaches.

We would love to have you join us, you can join Surfrider here.

Twisted Sister’s Jay Jay French on Rocked The Extreme Leadership Summit with Twisted Business

John Jay Jay French is the Founder, Guitarist and Manager of Twisted Sister. Known for his savvy business and entrepreneurial skills and his philanthropic spirit, Jay Jay talks about learning the business of music and how its not that different than your business and about……

This Video shows how John Jay Jay French Rocked it in San Diego at Bestselling Author Steve Farber’s Extreme Leadership Summit where he spoke in August.

Our Audio Interview with Jay Jay French in New York as he Talks About The Music Business and The Extreme Leadership Summit ►Right Click and “Save Link As” to Download File◄

The Video Interview

The audio Interview was done before Jay Jay’s talk from his office in New York. The video was taken at the conference after he had spoken to an excited group of entrepreneurs and business people.

I went to Steve Farber’s first ever Extreme Leaership Summit and now that it is over I can tell you it was a major success. NO Pitchfest, pure training, learning, networking and awesome entertainment. The message was important and Steve used his famous L.E.A.P. system to guide and help make the summit a wonderful experience. It was filled with speakers that taught Love of your business, client, worker and your product or service. It had speakers like Jay Jay French from Twisted Sister that were incredibly Energetic and Audacious and speakers like Simon Billsberry to give Proof of concept and implementation.

It was hard to get Jay Jay away from the throng of people that wanted his attention, but he stayed for the whole three days and made himself extremely available to the attendees. I grabbed him while he was signing autographs and got into the nitty gritty with him about his first talk on stage and about the music business and how what he learned creating one of the most successful bands in the history of rock, can help you and your business.

I loved Steve’s book so I knew the summit would be good, but I did not expect great and I got great. One night Steve and Jay Jay set it up so that Guitar Center and Epiphone Guitar supplied us with masses of instruments and a drum kit and we all got to go and play up on stage with Jay Jay. What a super honor. I played bass behind a couple of tunes… very cool. – JW

The Audio Interview

This was written before the summit.

After speaking to Steve Farber, recently about his first ever Extreme Leadership Summit, I could see that this was going to be one of those life changing experiences that we just do not find in most conferences and summits nowadays.

Steve is cool enough, but he also offered to allow his speakers to interview with me before the event….  Great for me because, although I don’t do commercials or infomercials for people, I do love to create and share excellent and valuable content for you, and Steve and the speakers promised they would tell some cool stories and give me some great content and value to pass on to you. (And They Have!.. )

It is also great for Steve so that he can get the word out on this unbelievable summit. Steve has put together an Extreme Training Intensive… This is not another one of those sellathon weekends where speakers pitch you to buy at the back of the room…

Steve has brought his closest friends that have excelled in Extreme Leadership and he brings them to you so that you can learn what you need to know to accelerate your business and your life to never before foreseen heights.

I heard that Jay Jay and Steve had met at Liz Strauss’ SOBCon Event and was happy to hear that Jay Jay would be speaking at Steve’s Extreme Leadership Summit.

As a musician myself and a guitar player at that, it was sure exciting to get to speak with Jay Jay French the guitarist for the legendary Twisted Sister.

Jay Jay tells a great story and is quite candid and I found that there was really no question he was not willing to answer.

The big thing we discussed was how similar the music business is to other industries and how it takes the same qualities and systems and steps to place preparation into the path of opportunity.

Jay Jay, is a rock star that plays guitar in front of 70 to 80 thousand screaming fans at huge arenas and stadiums, but as the founder and also the manager of the band and others, Jay Jay is also a very savvy businessman, an entrepreneur and someone that has paid some dues.

Never thought I would say that some of the smartest business information I got came from a rock guitarist from a band with a name like Twisted Sister.

I want to thank Jay Jay for his time, for being a great guest and for spending some substantial time with me right after getting off his European Tour… Thanks Jay Jay. – JW

Jay Jay French

Jay Jay French is a human enigma. His playing has inspired countless guitarists all over the world, and 30+ years after founding Twisted Sister, he is truly a living legend.

As a manager, he has worked with such diverse artists as Sevendust, songwriters Andrew Fortier and David Forman, blues guitar legend Johnny Gale, jam band heroes The Sound Of Urchin, underground new york legends The Step Kings, and Fred Sargolini–the “FS” of the world-famous new york DJ duo, Ming & FS.

In his combined roles as a guitarist, manager, and producer, Jay Jay has been responsible for the sale of over 12 million records worldwide and has 39 gold and platinum albums from 8 different countries.

Jay Jay has been in the rock’n’roll circus for three decades, and knows both sides of the stage and the microphone; yet, he keeps away from the gossip headlines and glamour nonsense that the industry is so infected with. He’s a New Yorker, but more so an international player that impresses on all levels. He’s tough when he’s on a mission, but his dedication, knowledge and trust is unheard of.  Jay Jay is the real deal – both as a musician, producer and manager, and he’s known by many as one of the most genuine people working in the music industry today.

“At the end of the day, Rock and roll is a business with universal business rules. You need to posses the ability to look inside yourself, be honest with what you see, re-invent, and then re-apply. And be fully prepared to be knocked down again.”

Jay Jay French’s Pinkburst Project Donates Over $110,000 to The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation

A total of $110,000 is being donated to The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation for ongoing research, education and support for those affected by Uveitis and other inflammatory eye diseases.

All custom guitars and amps in The Pinkburst Project collection were auctioned for sale during the Skinner Fine Musical Instruments on Sunday, May 1, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.

A benefit concert, “The Pinkburst Project: An Evening with Twisted Sister benefiting the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation” took place on Friday, April 29 at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square. Special guests included New York Yankee-great, Bernie Williams.

“When I embarked on the Pinkburst Project three and one-half years ago on behalf of my daughter Samantha and her struggle with her Uveitis, I did it at first to raise much needed money for research and a cure. I didn’t realize where that journey would take me.” stated French.

He continued, “The money raised of course is much needed but the media exposure and the realization that getting out the story could actually save people’s sight was something that I didn’t think about. Now I have come to realize that the combination of hard work, focus and the incredible help from so many people have created a social network of families who are fighting this disease and no longer feel like nobody in the world cares. People DO care.

The brotherhood of man has once again reached out to those in need and now the Pinkburst Project has given renewed hope to those afflicted that someday a cure may be found.”

“In spite of the fact that uveitis blinds thousands of patients every year, it remains “under the radar”, unknown by most and underappreciated even by many ophthalmologists as a cause of continuing misery and blindness. Raising awareness of this preventable tragedy among the public and educating eye doctors on the latest techniques proven to prevent blindness from uveitis is at the heart of the mission of the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation. The passion of Jay Jay French and of Twisted Sister in helping the Foundation in this matter is stunning, and our gratitude to them for this cannot be overstated.” Says. C. Stephen Foster, MD, President and Founder of the Ocular Immunology Uveitis Foundation.

What is Extreme Leadership?

If you haven’t already noticed, ‘Leadership’ has become just another one of those pseudo-pop-psycho-cultural buzzwords.

Over time, its meaning has been diluted to such a profound degree, that it’s just another one of those labels we use when we really mean ‘The one with the big office.’

True leadership doesn’t come from a snappy vocabulary, the books you have on your shelf, your place on the organization chart, or any other fabrication.

Leadership is intensely personal, intrinsically scary, and it requires us to live up to and beyond the point of fear—every single day. – Steve Farber

Extreme Leadership Summit 2012

Steve and his team have crafted The Extreme Leadership Summit to be something unique, something special, something…well…extreme. And it’s unlike any leadership or personal development “event” you’ve been to before.

The Summit is not a pitch fest (where a bunch of speakers try to sell you stuff), and it’s not a parade of talking heads, to mix a metaphor, where you passively sit, watch the show, take notes, and go home.

This is an experience, a process.

Informed by our brilliant thought-leader-speaker-coaches and with the help of your fellow participants (in small, focused MasterMind Teams), you’ll build a significant, personal Extreme Leadership Action Plan–a plan that you’ll begin applying to your life and business immediately, before The Summit even ends.

And–unlike other events–the vast majority of our speakers will be attending the entire conference. With you. We’re all in this thing together.

book greater than yourself steve farber

Greater Than Yourself

Too many people assume the timeless principles of true leadership—of helping others achieve their full potential—don’t apply Monday through Friday during work hours or in any circumstance where a paycheck is involved.

In GREATER THAN YOURSELF, Steve Farber proves them wrong: in this powerful and inspiring story, Farber shows that the goal of a genuine leader is to help others—teammates, employees, and colleagues—become more capable, confident, and accomplished than they are themselves. Through the actions of a forward-thinking and extraordinarily successful CEO, Farber reveals the three keys to achieving this: Expand Yourself, Give Yourself, and Replicate Yourself.

Filled with actionable principles and innovative ideas, GREATER THAN YOURSELF is perhaps the most powerful message today’s business leaders can learn.

Brian Mayne on Goal Mapping and Extreme Leadership

Inspirational Speaker, Author and creator of the world-leading achievement system Goal Mapping, Talks To Us About His System Born From His Incredible Life Story, his Books and….

About Bestselling Author Steve Farber’s Extreme Leadership Summit where he will be speaking in August 17th – 19th in San Diego, CA

Steve Farber is such a cool guy. I often report on conferences that….

Register for Extreme Leadership Summit

I think are exciting or that I really got a lot out of or just really think you should know about.

After speaking to Steve recently about his first ever Extreme Leadership Summit, I could see that this was going to be one of those life changing experiences that we just do not find in most conferences and summits nowadays.

Steve has brought his closest friends that have excelled in Extreme Leadership and he brings them to you so that you can learn what you need to know to accelerate your business and your life to never before foreseen heights.

I have to admit I had never heard of Brian Mayne until he was mentioned to me by Steve Farber, but what a treat he is.

I sat on the phone listening to Brian tell me about his past as a literal gypsy who did not learn to read or write till age 30! Then he wrote four, count them, four, very well received books. Amazing!

But what is more amazing is this formally illiterate gypsy devises a system of goal setting and achievement that rivals any system I have seen by far, and I have seen a few.

Brian realized that many of us get all the information we need to be successful, but some of us implement and others don’t. Brian incorporates all the sciences of the left and right brain in an easy to follow and understand program that allows you fully integrate, and if you choose, to apply his teachings into your life which will propel your success into the next dimension.

I was impressed at how simple, yet comprehensive Brian’s Goal Mapping program is.

I want to thank Steve for the connection to Brian, this was an eye opening interview that really gets me excited about going and meeting Brian and learning from him at the Extreme Leadership Summit. Also thank you to Brian for the time he allowed me and for how open and authentic he was in this interview. – JW

Brian Mayne

An inspirational speaker, author and teacher, Brian Mayne, creator of the world-leading achievement system Goal Mapping, shares eternal truths on success with simple language and from his own powerful life experience.

Born into a traveling fun-fair family with a nomadic childhood, Brian left school early with no qualifications and a poor education. When the family business failed in the UK recession of the late 1980s, he lost what seemed like everything–his income, his home and his marriage. He was 29 years old, a million pounds in debt, and still relatively unable to read or write.

Brian worked hard to teach himself how to read and write and started on a path to find discover how to be successful in order to get himself out of his great debt and get off the dark path he was on. After learning how to read, Brian read everything he could get his hands on, his favorite being personal development. One day Brian had an epiphany about how to map out his goals using words and pictures and he developed a seven step process he called Goal Mapping that allowed him to get himself out of debt, write four books and create a successful business showing others the programs that changed his life.

His core message of personal leadership through the practice of self response-ability and purpose led motivation have proven as effective and popular with the corporate world as it has with educationalists and the crowds who come to experience his public presentations.

As chairman of Lift International Brian is now actively involved in the process of developing and delivering the very finest empowerment material available. His seminars and workshops, like his acclaimed books Sam the Magic Genie and Goal Mapping are both clear in their message and practical in their application. Directed by a principle-centred philosophy, and clothed in the language of success psychology, Brian empowers his audiences with the very latest ‘human development’ technologies.

Amongst his many systems for success, Goal Mapping and Life Mapping have enabled him to help people create and steer change within their lives, winning him the gratitude of his audiences, and a place on the world stage of public speaking.

“One of mankind’s greatest fears is that of uncertain change. In reality, the only future thing, of which we can be absolutely certain, is that there will be continuing change to our lives. Learning how to steer the changes of life, towards the things that you desire, is my definition of success – teaching people how to do it, has become my passion and my life’s mission,”  Brian Mayne

Steve Farber Keynote Speaker

Leadership speaker and author, Steve Farber, has worked with a wide variety of public and private organizations in virtually every arena, from the tech sector to financial services, manufacturing, health care, hospitality, entertainment, retail, government agencies and more.

And whatever the audience, Steve’s speeches are always deeply thought-provoking and eminently practical, as well as inspiring and entertaining—a combination of qualities that are a must for any successful conference or meeting.

These are just a few of the great programs Steve presents to different organizations.

The Radical Leap

Extreme Leadership at Work and Beyond

Based on the book named as one of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time

In this chaotic and extreme age, business leaders must demonstrate an unprecedented level of passion, determination, foresight, dedication, and fearlessness. In this wildly popular speech, leadership speaker, Steve Farber, shows you how to use the LEAP framework – Love, Energy, Audacity and Proof to radically improve your organization and your life.

Greater Than Yourself

3 Steps to Attaining the New Gold Standard of Leadership

The truly great leaders in life and work become so by causing others to be greater than themselves. In this program—based on his new book, Greater Than Yourself—leadership speaker, Steve Farber, shows that dedicating yourself to bringing others along so that they can achieve more than you is the ultimate way to boost talent, ramp productivity and create truly significant current and future leaders.

Radical Accountability

Making the Leap From Individual Contributor to Extreme Leader

Whatever the challenge at your company—improving customer service, coping with change, inspiring transformation, improving corporate culture, recruiting and retaining great talent, building teamwork, fostering innovation—it all comes down to this: someone has to do something significant and enlist others to help. Someone, in other words, has to take accountability. Someone has to lead. And it doesn’t have to be the boss. Leadership, ultimately, has nothing to do with the title on your business card or your position on the organizational chart. It’s about who you are and what you do to change things for the better—regardless of your “place” in the company.

I was so happy to get Tommy Spaulding on with me. His book “Its Not Just Who You Know” is a bestseller and for a good reason. The info in this book is priceless. I thought I was a great networker.. I learned so much about what I was doing right, but more importantly, what I was doing wrong and this will create a major shift for me…

Sit back and listen to this extraordinary interview with Tommy Spaulding and don’t forget to register for this once in a lifetime event. The event is the first of it’s kind by Steve and he is not promising another…. Also do not forget to check out the speaker list. Tommy is just one of several top of the top speakers for this event.

A big thank you to Tommy as we had some issues getting this call together and appreciate his patience and fun loving attitude throughout the process  – JW

In It’s Not Just Who You Know, Tommy Spaulding — the former CEO of Up with People — has written the new How to Win Friends & Influence People for the twenty-first century. Success — in business and in life — is all about relationships. In this powerful guide, Spaulding takes Dale Carnegie’s classic philosophy to the next level, showing how, by developing deeper relationships through giving to others and putting them first, we benefit as well.

Tommy Spaulding learned at a very young age that he was not destined to be an academic star. He may have gotten a 4.0, but only if he added his high school and college GPAs together. The reason he found academics so challenging, Tommy discovered, is that he is dyslexic. But his dyslexia didn’t hold him back — in fact, it helped him to develop his innate talents. Tommy is a natural leader; he realized early on that he had the ability to connect with people, whatever their ages or backgrounds. As a teenager, he received a copy of How to Win Friends & Influence People from his father, and it quickly became his guide to building relationship skills.

Tommy developed into a leader in his school and community. His horizons expanded dramatically when he traveled the world as a cast member for Up with People, one of the largest nonprofit international leadership organizations in the world. After graduating from college and business school, he became an executive and eventually CEO of Up with People.

At every step, Tommy learned that the secret to achieving your full potential in life is reaching out for the support and insight and influence of others. None of us achieve success alone. We need the help of other people. In this candid, revealing, and deeply personal book, Tommy expands upon the principles that Dale Carnegie outlined seventy-five years ago and shows us how to take them one step further. To invite others to be partners in our lives and successes, Tommy notes, you first have to be genuinely interested in other people. Among the insights Tommy discusses in the book:

  • It’s not just who you know, or what they can do for you, but what you can do for them.
  • Motives matter.
  • Establishing a deeper connection is about authenticity, not manipulation; reciprocity, not selfishness.
  • Every relationship is a two-way street; we never know when a chance encounter can change the direction of our lives.

In the bestselling tradition of Dale Carnegie’s classic, It’s Not Just Who You Knowshows how each one of us can use the power of “netgiving” — of helping others — to expand our worlds and achieve our goals, and make a difference in our jobs, our careers, and our communities.

Register for Extreme Leadership SummitThis is an experience, a process.

What a wonderful night it was in downtown Los Angeles. The weather was perfect at LA Live and huge crowds of people from the LMFAO concert and the incredible E-3 convention were all walking around the various restaurants and shops.

I was invited to watch music studio engineer and producer Ken Scott who co-produced and engineered 4 of David Bowie’s albums and also helped engineer the sound for the David Bowie movie, answer questions about David, the album and the movie after a showing of the movie in the Grammy Museum, Clive Davis Theatre.

It was so awesome sitting in the green room where I set up the camera as Scott Goldman, Ken Scott and Bobby Owsinski sat and talked all about the backstage stuff.. Ever hear of being a fly on the wall? The pianist from the movie Mike Garson came in all of them talking made for one “Once in a Lifetime Experience”.

The movie is, of course, dated compared to what you see today, but it was excellently done with tons of backstage footage and dialog to really give you the feel of the whole experience.

Ken, Scott and Bobby were wonderful and gave great interviews. I would like to thank Devon Blaine of the Blaine Group and the guys for a wonderful evening. – JW

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Film

From Wikipedia

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is a 1973 documentary and concert movie by D.A. Pennebaker. It features David Bowie and his backing group The Spiders from Mars performing at the Hammersmith Odeon, July 3, 1973. The DVD release was later retitled Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture.

Background

Bowie had taken the stage persona of Ziggy Stardust, a science fiction based, theatrical, enigmatic, androgynous character and produced two albums during this period.

The evening of July 3 was the last show in the English concert tour promoting Bowie’s 1973 album Aladdin Sane and the 60th gig in a tour of Britain that started on May 12, though an American tour was already being booked for the autumn.

Very few in Bowie’s entourage knew of his decision to drop the Ziggy persona and cancel performing for a while; in the band only Mick Ronson had been told a few days before the final night.

At the end of the evening, aptly just before the song “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide“, Bowie announced that, Not only is this the last show of the tour, but it’s the last show that we’ll ever do. The phrasing was deliberately ambiguous, but most of the audience and many London newspapers and magazines took it to mean that Bowie was retiring from music. In fact, he had killed off his Ziggy persona but not his music career.

Recording

Pennebaker had been asked to come to London and film just a few songs but when he saw the first of the two London shows he realized that “there was a full-length film here asking to be made”.

Though he had only scant knowledge of Bowie’s music, apart from Space Oddity, he was impressed by the star’s onstage charisma and the range of his songs and quickly prepared to shoot the entire second gig, without knowing that it would include a dramatic final coup.[1]

Jeff Beck participated on three songs (two of them forming a medley) midway through the concert but was edited out from the final cut at his own wish.[2] The expanded version of “The Width of a Circle” was shortened by a few minutes for the soundtrack on vinyl and CD.

Cast

Additional musicians:

Sound recording

  • Ken Scott and Roy Thomas Baker engineered the recording of the concert
  • The original film, soundtrack album and DVD was mixed by Tony Visconti.

Release

The film was shown a few times at festivals in late 1973 and provoked strong interest and favorable reactions, but then disappeared from view until 1983, when it was released on home video accompanied by a soundtrack double album.

Evidently it became a casualty first of Bowie’s rapid image changes which left Ziggy and glam rock behind and then of the rupture between Bowie and MainMan in early 1975; after that point Bowie was reluctant to release or promote any new recordings dating from before Young Americans as he would have to give half the income from any such recordings to MainMan up to the end of 1982.

Only in recent years has the film become available for regular cinema presentations; for many years it was a home video exclusive.

Abbey Road To Ziggy Stardust: The Talk
With Producer Ken Scott

Co-author of Abbey Road To Ziggy Stardust, Ken Scott will discuss his time with The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, and a who’s who of classic rock acts.

From behind-the-scenes stories to some never-before-heard breakdowns of some classic songs, the evening will be both entertaining and informative.

Having worked with worked classic rock acts including Elton John, Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, Jeff Beck, Duran Duran, Harry Nilsson, the Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, America, Devo, Kansas, and many more, Scott has also played a big part in the world of jazz, being the first to integrate a more powerful rock sound into the genre.

Hear Ken Scott talk about the making of the Abbey Road To Ziggy Stardust, as well as his prolific career. After the talk, Scott usually takes questions from the audience and will sign copies of his book.

Pictures of My Visit to Broad Beach and The Four Seasons Hotel.

Starfish on Broad Beach by JW Najarian

Happy 4th of July 2012

Watching the story of Travis Mills, the veteran that lost all four limbs in Afgananistan, who has kept a great attitude as a man, a husband, a father and a patriot, makes me so proud of our US Veterans. Whether or not they were on the front lines or in positions of support. Whether or not they paid the highest price or not, we need to reflect on their necessary contribution to our freedom.

Freedom as a reality and as a concept is so important for us to fight for. There is no religion or political stance that can keep us from all wanting the best for our families.

It is about the dream and hope this country keeps alive for ourselves and the rest of the world.

You don’t have to be in the military to honor freedom and our independence. Believe in freedom. Live in tolerance of others and know that by sticking up for everyones rights you are doing your part.

What does Independence Day mean to you?

Steve Farber Extreme Leadership Summit Aug 17th – 19th in San Diego

Bestselling Author, Speaker, Consultant, Steve Farber sits down to tell us about his new Leadership Summit.

Steve Farber is extremely well known for his knowledge of what it takes to be a leader and for how to teach people how to be Extreme Leaders.

I heard that Steve was doing this Extreme Leadership Summit and I said, Sign Me Up!

Register for Extreme Leadership Summit

I met Steve Farber through Liz Strauss and Liz said “JW you need to interview Steve…” Well when Liz tells me to do something, I listen. She is one smart lady and she never says anything just to hear herself talk.

I had not read Steve’s book at that point and so the interview was from the view of… “o what’s your book about Steve?”

I was intrigued by what Steve was saying and after reading his book I get it. Extreme Leadership is more than being able to tell a couple people what to do and order some people around… it is about  Stoking Your Business, Amping Your Life and Changing the World.

Marianne Wiliamson said “Your playing small does not serve the world” and this is your chance to network, meet and play full on with people that will change your life.

Steve Thank You for putting this together, thank you for your time and thank you for wanting to share at a deeper level. – JW

We’ve crafted The Extreme Leadership Summit to be something unique, something special, something…well…extreme.

Register for Extreme Leadership SummitThis is an experience, a process.

Steve Farber Steve Farber

Steve was director of service programs at TMI, an international training consultancy, and then worked for 6 years as Vice President and Official Mouthpiece (that’s what it said on his business card) of The Tom Peters Company where he met several of his mentors including author/gurus Tom Peters, Jim Kouzes, and Terry Pearce.

In 2000, Farber established his own company, Extreme Leadership, Inc, where he is president and CEO. He is also the co-founder of The Center for Social Profit Leadership, a non-profit organization formed to serve the leadership development needs of social entrepreneurs, and served as Vice Chairman on the Board of Directors of the world-renown, Up With People, a global leadership program for students from 18 to 29 years old.

A Universal Message.

“Approach the act of leadership as you’d approach an extreme sport: learn to love the fear and exhilaration that naturally comes with the territory.”

Steve Farber is the president of Extreme Leadership, Incorporated, and the founder of The Extreme Leadership Institute, organizations devoted to the cultivation and development of Extreme Leaders in the business community, non-profits and education.

His third book, Greater Than Yourself: The Ultimate Lesson In Leadership, was a Wall Street Journal® and USA Today® bestseller.

His second book, The Radical Edge: Stoke Your Business, Amp Your Life, and Change the World, was hailed as “a playbook for harnessing the power of the human spirit.”

And his first book, The Radical Leap: A Personal Lesson in Extreme Leadership, is already considered a classic in the leadership field. It received Fast Company magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award and was recently named one of the 100 Best Business Books of All Time. His newest edition, The Radical Leap Re-Energized: Doing What You Love in the Service of People Who Love What You Do, is in bookstores now.

Steve Farber’s masterwork, The Radical Leap Re-Energized, is an inspired opus on what it means to be a leader of substance and significance. You’ll find yourself coming back to it again and again.” –Michael E. Ventling, Global CFO, Ernst & Young

book greater than yourself steve farber

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Splitting?

After only just around 6 years Katie Holmes files for divorce from Tom Cruise and asks for full custody of daughter Suri.

I usually do not report on this sort of thing, but I am truly shocked and sad for all concerned.

Here is the best most complete story I found so far from Rueters Press

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Divorce: Who Will Get What?

By Deanne Katz, Esq. at FindLaw.com

Fri Jun 29, 2012 10:19pm EDT

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are seeking a divorce after almost six years of marriage.

It looks like there won’t be a happy ending for TomKat and it looks like Holmes is the one who wants out. She filed for divorce on Thursday, June 28. The couple has quite a few assets to split, including a huge house in Beverly Hills, and they both have sizable incomes from their acting careers.

Not only that, they’ll have to figure out how to share their 6-year-old daughter Suri Cruise.

The couple lives in Beverly Hills so you would expect California law to be applied to the separation of assets. That said, it will depend on where the divorce case is litigated. Subsequent news reports today have stated that Holmes may have filed anonymously in New York, Reuters reports. Cruise recently showed up alone to premieres for his new musical film, “Rock of Ages.”

If you’ve wondered where the film industry is headed, you’ll want to listen to this interview of the co-founders of PFL Transmedia.

Award-winning Hollywood director Brett Leonard (Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity, T-Rex:  IMAX 3D) and high-tech and international entrepreneur Christopher Creber talk about

  • The PopFictionLife concept/lifestyle
  • What’s a FragFilm?
  • How PFL Transmedia will change the film industry

PopFictionLifePFL Transmedia

PFL Transmedia is a company positioned under the PopFictionLife brand name, with its new genre of interactive digital content called a FragFilm™, set to be as disruptive to the film industry as iTunes is to the music industry, and as indispensable for sharing and discovering video as Instagram is for photos.

FragFilm

Originally developed to monetize music content, a PopFictionLife FragFilm delivers engaging entertainment for the hyper-interactive generation that is no longer content to passively watch content but rather seeks to engage at a deeper level in collaboration with friends on social media.

Overwhelmed with vast quantities of low-quality user-generated video, they expect content quality that was previously available only at high-priced movie theatres.

Targeting the intersection point of these major trends, a PopFictionLife FragFilm delivers engaging entertainment.

A FragFilm is a unique entertainment experience, focusing on story, character, and emotion while adding engagement, interaction, and collaboration.

PopFictionLife is leveraging existing social media and distribution networks, and has developed innovative proprietary technology to deliver a unique experience for consumers and a robust revenue model for independent content creators.

PopFictionLife believes that is the solution to the needs of digital media consumers, content creators and brand managers.

FragFilm is a high-quality piece of independent feature-length digital entertainment content (used to be called a “movie”), produced without a big Hollywood budget (under a million bucks), designed to be initially distributed to you, the digital entertainment consumer (also known as the “audience”) in frags (short for “fragments”) through the Internet and the best part is….

I am a big nerd. I have a degree in electronics, I love Sci-Fi and technology, I have worked in the computer industry, I am a musician, I make videos, I run an investor site where I get to talk to investors struggling with new technologies and I am a social media geek. So you can only imagine my surprise that I was able to get one of the most innovative, digital media film directors Brett Leonard and international high-tech entrepreneur Christopher Creber on the same call.

And to talk about new media creation, proprietary technologies and marketing strategies based around social media, music, film and new paradigm technologies, was absolutely amazing.

Thank you to Brett and Christopher for working me into their busy schedules and for staying with me and answering all my questions. The talk was fun and the content was full of these two guys brilliance. – JW

Brett LeonardBrett Leonard

Brett Leonard is considered one of Hollywood’s most innovative film directors, and is known as one of the entertainment industry’s digital media visionaries. Mr. Leonard directed and co-wrote the hit motion picture The Lawnmower Man, starring Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey.

The film is considered a cult classic, way ahead of its time in the use of groundbreaking computer graphics and the portrayal of a networked data culture. The Lawnmower Man is one of the true progenitors of the “cyber genre” and was the number one commercially successful independent film of 1992, costing under $6 million and earning over $200 million worldwide.

In 1993 Mr. Leonard was a key participant of the Sony 2000 think tank, a small group of media visionaries assembled to discuss the future of media. He also directed Peter Gabriel’s Kiss That Frog, the first all computer graphic music video/ride film. Kiss That Frog toured the world as a wildly popular theme park attraction, and won Mr. Leonard a 1994 MTV Music Video Award.

In the ensuing years, Mr. Leonard has continued to push the envelope in his feature film work, establishing himself as a pioneer of digital visual effects and cutting-edge independent film. He stepped into the third dimension with his IMAX 3D work, and directed T-Rex in IMAX 3D, which was the No.#1 hit 3D movie in history for over ten years, having grossed over $100 million worldwide on IMAX screens alone.

Mr. Leonard is also known for having a keen eye for new talent. He was instrumental in bringing Russell Crowe to American film audiences, giving Russell his first lead in a Hollywood film, Virtuosity, starring Denzel Washington, directed by Mr. Leonard. He did the same for Alicia Silverstone in his film for Tri-Star, Hideaway. 2 Rising star, Alex O’Loughlin (lead in the CBS series’ Moonlight, and Three Rivers, the recent hit feature The Back-up Plan and his current role as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett on CBS’s Hawaii Five-O), was given his first break by Brett, and has appeared in Mr. Leonard’s films, Man-Thing and Feed.

The Art of Elysium

MISSION

The Art of Elysium, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization founded in 1997, encourages working actors, artists and musicians to voluntarily dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions. We provide artistic workshops in the following disciplines: acting, art, comedy, fashion, music, radio, songwriting and creative writing.

VISION

The Art of Elysium is dedicated to enriching the lives of artists and critically ill children. We believe that there is a powerful and mutual exchange of hope and appreciation that occurs when artists share their time and talent with children battling serious medical conditions.

vision1.jpg

The lives of these children are largely filled with suffering, loneliness, fear and regimen. Artists have the unique ability to help children in need find a creative

vision2.jpg

voice and discover a sense of individuality and self-efficacy, even in the midst of overwhelmingly difficult circumstances.

In return, those same artists, who have been taken outside of their normal scope of work, are stretched and enriched in ways they never imagined.

Through this inimitable exchange between artist and child, the artist experiences the power of giving and the child experiences the power of their own artistic journey.

GOALS

• Create The Art of Elysium Center, a place where children can learn and artists can showcase their work. During the day, the center will be open for children in need to be taught acting, art processes, comedy and music. In the evening, the facility will be used for participating artists to present their creative work.

• Provide musical instruments, compact discs, videotape, art supplies and makeup for various pediatric facilities we serve.
goals_multi1.jpg
• Fulfill special requests for medically challenged youth, including but not limited to providing individual, continuing lessons in the arts after discharge from the hospital.

• Now that The Art of Elysium has opened in New York, further expansion into additional cities such as Memphis and/or Nashville.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, JENNIFER HOWELL landed in Los Angeles shortly after graduating Emerson College with a B.S. in Mass Communications/Film Focus. It was Jennifer’s love for film making that brought her to Hollywood but it was her deeper love for children that led her to her mission: The Art Of Elysium.

howell1.jpgIn the middle of December 1996, Jennifer’s close friend, Stephen Hatten, was in the midst of one his worst bouts with the Leukemia he’d been diagnosed with years earlier.

Stephen shared with Jennifer the story of a young boy he had recently met at a treatment center.

A young boy who was by himself for the majority of his time spent there, on his own because both of his parents had jobs that they could not abandon.

Although one could interpret Stephen’s story as well, just a story, Jennifer heard his message loud and clear. And the message Jennifer heard was this: No child should ever be alone during treatment.

And so it was. Jennifer started by gathering some friends, getting clearance from the children’s hospital and bringing her world into their world.

With her Southern lilt and a spirit that was and is boundless, Jennifer and her friends brought the kids a respite from their reality, a little bit of laughter and a smile that found its form more quickly each time.

Jennifer’s friend Stephen passed away in 1998, but his story turned message turned mission has caught on. Along with her team, Jennifer’s The Art of Elysium continues to bring singers, artists, actors and writers into children’s hospitals and pediatric care facilities where they bring their talents, and of course their hearts, to the kids.

What was once Jennifer and a few friends is now a community of people who share the idea that no child should go through medical treatment alone.

Child Help

The story of Childhelp is about two young Hollywood actresses’ “chance” encounters—one with 11 homeless orphans abroad, and one with Nancy Reagan—and how they led to a lifelong commitment to helping children in need.

The Childhelp Story

Yvonne (left) and Sara – 1959

The Beginning of a Lifetime Commitment to Children…

Eleven half-American, half-Japanese orphans wandering homeless in Tokyo following a typhoon sparked a mission that has spanned internationally for nearly 50 years and impacted the lives of millions of children.

Hollywood actresses Sara Buckner (O’Meara) and Yvonne Lime (Fedderson) first met on the set of The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, when they played the girlfriends of Ricky and David Nelson. Their mission for children began in 1959 when they were sent on a government-sponsored goodwill tour to visit troops in Japan.  Read More………

Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Every year 3.3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving 6 million children; that’s because reports can include multiple children. What is Child Abuse

Although there are many formal and acceptable definitions of child abuse, the following is offered as a guide for information on child abuse and neglect.

Child abuse consists of any act of commission or omission that endangers or impairs a child’s physical or emotional health and development. Child abuse includes any damage done to a child which cannot be reasonably explained and which is often represented by an injury or series of injuries appearing to be non-accidental in nature.

Forms of Child Abuse

Physical abuse

Any non-accidental injury to a child. This includes hitting, kicking, slapping, shaking, burning, pinching, hair pulling, biting, choking, throwing, shoving, whipping, and paddling.

Sexual abuse

Any sexual act between an adult and child. This includes fondling, penetration, intercourse, exploitation, pornography, exhibitionism, child prostitution, group sex, oral sex, or forced observation of sexual acts.

Neglect

Failure to provide for a child’s physical needs. This includes lack of supervision, inappropriate housing or shelter, inadequate provision of food and water, inappropriate clothing for season or weather, abandonment, denial of medical care and inadequate hygiene.

Emotional abuse

Any attitude or behavior which interferes with a child’s mental health or social development. This includes yelling, screaming, name-calling, shaming, negative comparisons to others, telling them they are “bad, no good, worthless” or “a mistake.” It also includes the failure to provide the affection and support necessary for the development of a child’s emotional, social, physical and intellectual well-being. This includes ignoring, lack of appropriate physical affection (hugs), not saying “I love you,” withdrawal of attention, lack of praise and lack of positive reinforcement.

Additional information regarding signs and symptoms of abuse (PDF).

What do I do if I think someone is abusing a child?

If a child discloses that he or she has been abused by someone, it is important that you LISTEN to them most of all.

  • Ask ONLY four questions
  • What happened?
  • Who did this to you?
  • Where were you when this happened?
  • When did this happen?
Asking any additional questions may contaminate a case!

DO NOT

  • Investigate
  • Ask leading questions (a question that suggests the answer or contains the information the questioner is looking for – That man touched you, didn’t he?)
  • Make promises
  • Notify the parents or the caretaker

DO

  • Provide a safe environment (be comforting, welcoming, and a good listener)
  • Tell the child it was not his/her fault
  • Listen carefully
  • Document the child’s exact quotes
  • Be supportive, not judgmental
  • Know your limits
  • Tell the truth

If you suspect abuse, but a child has not disclosed to you, call 1-800-4-A-CHILD. Or counselors can talk through the situation with you and help decide what the best course of action is.

JK Simmons Supports Sunshine Kids

JK Simmons of The Closer and Spiderman Supports Kids with Cancer through Sunshine Kids

I caught JK Simmons of The Closer and Spiderman at the GBK Academy Awards Gifting Suite while he was out supporting the many vendors and non-profits the the event.

JK talked to us about the Sunshine Kids. A charity that puts together all kinds of great trips and adventures for kids suffering with cancer.

JK Simmons may be one of the most versatile actors in the industry today as he has played so many diverse roles. It is always nice to interview someone with initials for a first name. Thanks JK.JW

JK Simmons

JK Simmons

From Wikipedia

Simmons was a Broadway actor and singer. He was in the revival of Guys and Dolls as Benny Southstreet. In 1994 he sang multiple roles in the Wagner opera satire, DAS BARBECU.[3]

He also played the role of Jigger in a revival of Carousel with the Houston Grand Opera. He also starred in the 1987 Off-Broadway musical Birds of Paradise.

Simmons is known for his TV roles as Dr. Emil Skoda, a police psychiatrist, who has appeared on three of the four incarnations of Law & Order and New York Undercover, and as the sadistic inmate Vernon Schillinger on the prison drama Oz. He also stars as Ralph Earnhardt, the father of race-car driver Dale Earnhardt, in 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story. He played B.R. in the film Thank You For Smoking and has been praised for his performance in Juno as “Mac” McGuff, the title character’s father. Currently, he plays Will Pope, Assistant Chief of the LAPD, in The Closer.

He also played J. Jonah Jameson in all three Spider-Man films and the expanded video game adaption of Spider-Man 3. Simmons provided his voice for two newspaper editors in two episodes of the eighteenth season of The Simpsons. The characters are never named, but are obviously meant to emulate the character of Jameson (one, bearing Jameson’s appearance, even demands “pictures of Spider-Man”, then on being reminded he works at a poetry journal, demands “poems about Spider-Man”).

Simmons also provides the voice of the yellow M&M in the product’s commercials, as well as the 3-D film “I Lost My M in Vegas” playing at M&M’s World in Las Vegas, NV. He has also done voiceover work for Norelco razors. He also provided the voice of General Wade Eiling in Justice League Unlimited. He recorded an audio book for Tom Clancy’s Net Force Point of Impact. Like many of his Law & Order co-stars, he also appeared in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street, portraying a criminal in an episode that crossed over with Law & Order before Simmons joined the cast as Skoda. He also played a small role as an army general in the television sitcom Arrested Development, alongside his Juno co-stars, Michael Cera and Jason Bateman. As well, he played Dan the Barber in the surreal Nickelodeon kid’s show The Adventures of Pete & Pete in 1995. In 2008 he had a small part as the “CIA Superior” in Burn After Reading. Simmons appears also in Postal as Candidate Wells. He has also been featured as Professor Nathaniel Burke of the University of Farmers in television commercials for Farmers Insurance Group beginning in 2010.[4] He also played Paul Rudd‘s father in I Love You, Man

Simmons is quickly becoming known for starring in films that are produced or directed by his friend Jason Reitman, including Thank You for Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air and Jennifer’s Body, written by Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody.

Recently it was confirmed that Simmons will voice the character of Tenzin, an Airbending Master and the son of Aang and Katara, in the 2012 Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Legend of Korra. Also, he will reprise the role as the voice of J. Jonah Jameson in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man and in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

DC Cordova on Best of Breed Business Strategies for a New Age

Author, Speaker, Leader, Mentor, Teacher and Student DC Cordova talks to us about her mentors and teachers and the proven business strategies

That are more important than ever in this new economy.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbNZrcSZX9g]

I have known DC Cordova for years. I should say I know of her.. She does not know me as well… We have worked in the same organization (HUB), we have mutual friends and have met on a few occasions.

The first time I spoke with her. She called me.. I was so surprised and honored that she had called me!? Wow… and then I found it that she had called me to tell me that her computer guy was freaking out.. I was in the middle of sending her a large data file and she had called me to ask me to stop sending the file to her office.

This was some time back and the file was so large that it almost shut down her company server… I apologized all the time embarrassed for my stupidity. I have an IT background and should have known that the file was too large…

All is well that ends well and today is a new day…

Have you ever met anyone you feel an instant affinity for? DC is one of those people. Nothing strange or mystical here. DC is just a very open and loving person so it is not hard to feel special around her.

I was so excited to finally get her to do a short interview with me.

D.C. personally studied with the famous inventor, futurist and author of over 30 books, Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller and was the great Marshall Thurber‘s business partner. After Marshall retired D.C. and Robert Kiyosaki continued to teach Money and You for some time, till Robert went on his own journey. This all makes DC a true treasure. DC Thank you for the time you spent with me and thoroughly look forward to speaking again soon. – JW

I met Kim at the first Enlightened Entrepreneur Summit. She is so fun and full of live and her husband / partner Vito is such a nice guy.

Great to see you and to catch you on video Kim, but I really want her back to pic her brilliance about setting a company apart and breathing new life into them with strategic marketing and branding. Thanks Kim- JW

Intention Products is also offering free Conscious Business Development Kits featuring digital curriculum materials developed by BrandU®.

BrandU

A lot of people come to BrandU after they were diasppointed by the hope and the hyped-up promises of other programs, only to discover that they didn’t get what they needed— real steps and real support to create a business that expresses what they want to bring to the world and one they and their family can rely on for life.

Another thing that makes it so often challenging today to get real business-building support is the all the information available to us today. It can easily be confusing and overwhelming. It’s hard to distingush one thing from another and even more difficult to determine what the right next step for you is when there’s so many different approaches to take.

We’ve simplified that for you by breaking the stages of growth that every business goes through starting from the very beginning to keep you aware of where you are at every moment during your business adventure. You can find out more about these stages in Getting Out of Overwhelm.

Fortunately you’re here now, because with BrandU you’ll find support to build your business foundation solidy from the start—even if you’re bringing years of experience with you.  We’ve spent over 6 years and nearly two million dollars developing our process-based results-driven programs along side entrepreneurs to make sure every step you take is tested and proven to deliver immediate, as well as long-lasting results that come from the power of extreme clarity.

In fact, across the board, that’s the comment we most often receive from people who have gone through our programs.  That’s why we call it clarity all the way to the bank™. You can find out more in Success Stories.

What fuels these often very fast results is the step-by-step, Integral processes that are woven through and through every program. No more wasting time or money by guessing. You have at your fingertips a definitive path all laid out in front of you broken down into easy-to-follow steps. It’s real business made real simple for creative entrepreneurs. You can see how each of the three program in the Business Profit System breaks down in Programs at a Glance.

In addition to breaking down business into steps that anyone can follow, even if you’ve never been in business before, we’ve also invested hours upon hours to substantiate all BrandU programs by incorporating into each program the power of an age-old science. Once you start applying this illuminating science to your business, every step you take becomes a game—one you’ll actually enjoy playing. You can learn more about it in The Science Behind Us.

Another comment we hear repeatedly from entrepreneurs who experience our programs is how whole each step is—not only practical knowledge but also in how we deliver them.  That’s because BrandU is an equal creation of both Kim Castle and W. Vito Montone.  In addition to bringing our 25+ years of experience of working on both sides of brand creation, we also bring two very opposite approaches and vastly different skill sets to the table.

Kim brings her gift of emotional communication and what it takes to connect at the heart of customers and keep them engaged.  You can discover more about Kim in The Insight of Kim Castle. Vito brings his left brain ability to structure and break anything down into easy-to-do accomplish-able steps as well as combining both holistic and liner forms into one whole experience.  You can discover more about Vito in The Genius of Vito Montone.

We realize it’s a big deal to decide to bring in support and guidance to help you create the business of your dreams. Not just financially but also emotionally. There’s no more time to waste.  In addition to our distinctly different approach to business creation is how we back up your results. That’s right, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you’ll be fully supported.  You can find out more about our promise in Our Guarantee.

In addition to our support of you, we believe an integral part of every business is the component of connecting to bigger impact, that’s why we are proud to support a variety of organizations and movements by giving back.  You can discover who we’re supporting now in Giving Back.

If you have a comment or a question that we haven’t addressed, please reach out to us and ask. That’s why BrandU was created. Simply click on Support and type away.  An answer will be on its way to you shortly.

Most all we acknowledge you for being here and your willingness to step up and into your power as an entrepreneur. We’re honored at the opportunity to support you.

We hope you enjoy getting to know us. Then it will be our turn to get to know you!

Don Miguel Ruiz – The Four Agreements + the 5th
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDHgOqhrdpE]

I read The Four Agreements after first seeing them. Just the titles made sense and I wanted to know more.

Don Miguel had just flown in from Mexico and got to hang out in his room for a couple of hours before speaking in front of a packed room at the Enlightened Entrepreneur Summit in Anaheim, CA

After his talk he was surrounded for some time by fans and people that wanted to tell him what they thought or ask questions, get pictures get their books signed and on and on… I would be done.., but I walked up to Don and asked if he was up for an interview before he left. I barely got out the words when he came at me with a wonderfully loving inviting hug as if I was his best friend and he had been waiting in anticipation for me to arrive. I have been around many in the thought leader realm and this was different and wholly authentic and I have to admit it through me for a second.

I enjoyed it and arm and arm we walked to the place where I had set up the camera. The rest you will see here. Thank you for your time and your wonderful energy Don xo – JW

Don Miguel Ruiz

Don Miguel Ruiz The four agreements the fifth agreement

Don Miguel Ruiz was born into a family of healers, and raised in rural Mexico by a curandera (healer) mother and a nagual (shaman) grandfather.

The family anticipated that Miguel would embrace their centuries-old legacy of healing and teaching, and carry forward the esoteric Toltec knowledge. Instead, distracted by modern life, Miguel chose to attend medical school and become a surgeon.

A near-death experience changed his life. Stunned by this experience, he began an intensive practice of self-inquiry.

He devoted himself to the mastery of the ancient ancestral wisdom, studying earnestly with his mother, and completing an apprenticeship with a powerful shaman in the Mexican desert.

In the tradition of the Toltecs, a nagual guides an individual to personal freedom.

Don Miguel is a nagual from the Eagle Knight lineage, and is dedicated to sharing his knowledge of the teachings of the ancient Toltecs.

He is the author of The Four Agreements, The Mastery of Love, and The Four Agreements Companion Book. Website: www.MiguelRuiz.com

The Four Agreements

According to Don Miguel Ruiz, everything we do is based on agreements we have made — agreements with ourselves, with other people, with God, with life. But the most important agreements are the ones we make with ourselves.

In these agreements we tell ourselves who we are, how to behave, what is possible, what is impossible. One single agreement is not such a problem, but we have many agreements that come from fear, deplete our energy, and diminish our self-worth.

In The Four Agreements, Don Miguel reveals the source of self-limiting agreements that rob us of joy and create needless suffering.

When we are ready to change these agreements, there are four deceptively simple, yet powerful agreements that we can adopt as guiding principles.

Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, the Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love.

Agreement 1

Be impeccable with your word – Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Agreement 2

Don’t take anything personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Agreement 3

Don’t make assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Agreement 4

Always do your best – Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

There is one more agreement Don Ruiz wrote about that he believes you discover after realizing the first four.

Agreement 5

Question Everything. “Don’t believe me, don’t believe others, don’t believe yourself.” Eliminating belief systems are one of the core teachings of the Toltec Path. Whenever you have a belief, you no longer perceive what is.

Also if someone says they have the true and only answer.. run the other way. Take the knowledge from all that suits your path and be willing to change your opinion swiftly as the world goes from flat to round and Earth no longer is the center of the universe.

New Directions Color Guard Memorial Day 2012 Walk for Warriors in Los Angeles

New Directions Color Guard Memorial Day 2012
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVbYpTwebkQ]

New Directions Color Guard

The New Directions Color Guard is manned by US Veterans that are in the recovery program at New Directions.

These men are an exceptional representational cross section of the men and women that are helped daily by New Directions.

These men all have different, yet similar tragic stories of how they struggled with drugs or mental issues after their military service.

They are proud to be vets and are working hard to get their lives together with the help of New Directions, family and the friends they meet there.

Since I used to watch my father march in the Air Force and I myself marched in the Navy, I have been a sucker for watching the color guard. It is one of a few regrets that I have that I was not part of a color guard myself.

I always get such a feeling of pride and reverence whenever I watch a color guard go through their paces. I especially get emotional with the New Directions Color Guard because I know these guys have struggled so hard to get here and that reminds me that there is hope that the thousands of lost vets can find help.

I appreciate the guys giving me a minute to talk with them and that they were so open about their struggles. Thank you New Directions Color Guard- JW

New DirectionsNew Directions

New Directions, a nonprofit transitional living program, has been helping the Los Angeles veteran community since 1992.

According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), there are more than 8,000 homeless veterans on any given night in Los Angeles.

New Directions offers a wide variety of services including housing, substance abuse treatment, counseling, remedial education, job training and placement as well as family reunification and money management classes.

Why do we exist?

New Directions provides services, support and transitional housing to homeless veterans with co-occurring disorders. Essential services at New Directions’ five residential homes include drug and alcohol detoxification and rehabilitation, mental health treatment, food, clothing, shelter, job training, and help with finding permanent housing. This nonprofit agency is unique because it was founded by formerly homeless Vietnam veterans, and has developed an effective “veterans helping veterans” model.

As women and men head home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there are more and increasingly diverse vets in need of help. New Directions’ individualized care and treatment methods enable the agency to provide comprehensive, holistic services to veterans of all ages and backgrounds – both seasoned veterans and a new generation just now returning from combat.

What have you accomplished?

From its founding in 1992, New Directions’ history has been filled with reclaimed lives, rediscovered futures and re-imagined possibilities for more than 30,000 veterans who have faithfully and generously served our country.

Each year, New Directions extends help to some 600 veterans through residential substance abuse treatment programs, job training and placement, health assessment and emergency shelter services and a permanent housing placement program. Since beginning operations in an 8-person home, New Directions has grown into a major national model for rehabilitating and housing homeless veterans. Now with 5 facilities, 229 beds, and new permanent, supportive housing in development, New Directions makes a difference in the lives of individual veterans, and on the landscape of homelessness in Los Angeles.

Devine is the recipient of 16 Emmys, including the Academy’s prestigious Governor’s Award, and one award specifically for a story on injured and disfigured veterans.

“I’m thrilled to be participating in Walk for Warriors,” Devine said. “With the unique set of challenges facing veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, this event will bring attention to the urgent need for supporting our vets as they transition home.”

I was very proud to cover the 1st Annual Walk for Warriors in 2011 so I jumped to cover the 2nd annual event.

Local business, media, Veterans and their families and supporters showed up to participate in an 5K walk and run to help bring awareness and needed funds to New Directions, which help get US Veteran homeless men and women, off the streets.

The more that help the homeless. New Directions takes care of all the needs of the veteran to help them get back on their feet and into the community with th knowledge that they have help and the support needed to quit or stay away from drugs and other intolerable situations. New Directions also helps them find work or at least can help them get ready for that all important interview.

I am so proud that we at On Purpose Magazine and US Veteran on LinkedIn get a chance to work with and help this wonderful organization in any way we can.

Thank you so much Greg and Brendan for your time and for putting on this great event. – JW

E-book vs. Print

E-book vs. Print

There are two types of people in the world: those who realize that this world is constantly reinventing itself and are usually capable of recognizing the new directions in which the world is headed, and those who can’t.

There’s this pathological fear that the world is more and more superficial; kids are dumb, the world is too fast and hungry and wants only to be fed information via an usb cable, people aren’t reading, paperbacks aren’t selling, bookstores are closing, and no one seems to read the newspapers anymore. And this is a global fear, it affects people on all continents, and yet…

Writing with a Deeper Point of View (POV)

Always on the prowl for interesting articles I found these two great blog posts on deepening your POV as a writer and found this so interesting that I had to share them… – JW

Deeper POV

From: iuemag.com

by Jody Lebel, Western Massachusetts

When you write in deep POV (point of view) you will never have to say s/he felt, s/he thought or s/he knew… realized… speculated… wondered… etc. These phrases create narrative distance. They are ‘telling’ sentences. The reader is at arm’s length, not in your character’s head where they belong.

If we are deep into our character’s psyche we can proceed directly to whatever it was s/he was thinking. In deep POV we get straight to the point exactly like the person would, creating ‘showing’ sentences. Here are some examples.

Before: He wondered if Kim would show up at the picnic.
After: Would Kim show up drunk at the picnic like last year and spoil it again?
Before: Two men approached the house. I hoped it wasn’t the cops again.
After: A pair of strangers walked briskly up the walk towards the front door. Not the cops again.
Before: He thought the dog needed a bath.
After:What a smell. He eyed the pristine bathroom then studied the muddy animal. What that dog needed was a good bath.

Another way to write with a deeper POV is to remove the was/were and rephrase with a hook. Start with a basic sentence: The night was dark. Pretty boring! Your reader is yawning…… Read More http://www.iuemag.com/june2012/deeper-pov.php

Deep Point of View

Katie Ganshert June 18, 2012

Rivet your readers with deep point of view writing Jill Elizabeth NelsonDeep point of view allows the reader to feel and experience exactly what our characters feel and experience. Authors who do deep point of view well often create stories that are highly engaging – where the characters come to life and the reader gets lost in the pages.

Once we get the hang of it, deep point of view takes our writing to the next level.

So when I saw a tweet about this book called Rivet Your Readers with Deep Point of View, free on Kindle for a limited time, I was immediately intrigued. I hadn’t read a craft book in awhile, so I hopped on over and downloaded it.

I’m super glad I did.

It is a super quick (it’ll take you an hour, tops), informative read.

Not only did I freshen up on some important writing techniques, I now have a craft book I can recommend to lots and lots of writers.

The author (Jill Elizabeth Nelson) addresses techniques that so many writers fail to employ.

Mistakes I see all the time whenever I critique a piece of writing or judge a contest entry.

Two of the BIGGIES:

  • Authorial Intrusions
  • Prepositional Tells

Authorial Intrusions

Anytime you put an invisible narrator between the reader and the character, you’ve inserted an authorial intrusion.

Phrases like she wondered, she felt, she saw, she wished, she decided are all examples. Purging them from your manuscript will take your prose to the next level.

For example:

She realized where she put her purse.

Can be changed to…

Oh, right. That’s where she left her purse.

Another example:

She spotted the lime green bike swerving through traffic.

Can be changed to… READ MORE http://katieganshert.com/writing/deep-point-of-view/

NBA Finals tied 1-1

Dear Fans,

First of all I have to say this series that we are watching the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. the Miami Heat is one of the best NBA Finals match-ups that we will probably ever see.

The series is tied up so far at 1 a piece. In the two games so far both teams have played really tough and Miami has come out strong at the beginning taking demanding leads. In game 1 Kevin Durant lead his team through a difficult come back and got the job done . The final score was 105-94 OKC.

Durant finished with 36 points while LeBron James finished with 30.  In game 2 of the NBA Finals Durant was no able to quite lead his team all the back from a difficult deficit in which the Heat came out on top 100-96.

Both James and Durant finished with 32 points. Now the series goes over to Miami for 3 straight games where the Heat have the opportunity to finish things out at home. It is going to be tough for the Thunder but i think they will be a-ok. ~ Bear

Matt Cain throws a Perfect Game

Last night was a very special night for Matt Cain

Image

Matt Cain, starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants and the sellout crowd of 42,298 fans cheering him on. Last night Cain made history throwing his first ever Perfect Game.

This was the only Perfect Game thrown in San Francisco’s history and just the 22’nd ever thrown Perfect Game. Cain pitched 125 pitches of pure greatness and struck out 14 batters a career high for himself.

There were two close plays that had Cain holding his breath. First was a deep fly ball in the sixth inning hit by Chris Synder in which right fielder Melky Cabrera chased it down and made a leaping catch at the wall.

Second was another deep fly ball hit by Jordan Schafer in the seventh which seemed absolutely impossible that right fielder Gregor Blanco was going to be able to make a play on that ball.

Well he did alright in extraordinarily fashion. He ran so far so fast and made an incredible diving catch to get the out and keep Cain’s hopes alive. After that play it was smooth sailing from there on out for Cain completing not only his first perfect game but the 1’st ever in the Giants franchise’s history. ~ Bear
