TWO WEEK NOTICES WENT OUT WITH NICKEL BEERS

banner james carlini - Carlini's CornerBy James Carlini

Memorial Day 2013

banner flag 01The past two years I have gone to a Walk for Warriors in Los Angeles, CA to honor vets and their families. This year due to some health issues I can not make it, but I do want to let everyone know about it.

Also if you have a special place you go or some great cause or organization you believe needs support please mention them here!

I have found that most veterans do not know what is available out there and there actually is a fair amount of third party resources for vets in need.

I found this on the Internet and thought it was good to check out as a country we need to make Memorial Day and Veterans Day count. JW

MUSEUMS: SETTING A FUTURE DIRECTION BY PRESERVING HISTORY

banner james carlini - Carlini's CornerBy James Carlini

Any civilization in the last 5,000 years can only be understood and measured by what we can read and discover about them.  If they did not keep track of their accomplishments and cultures, chances are, we would know very little about them and their achievements.

  •  If you do not know where you came from, do you really have a good idea of where you are headed?
  • How do you build upon the accomplishments of the past or avoid the mistakes of the past if you are unaware of them?

These seem to be good questions to ask people who do not have a good grasp of how this country started and developed throughout the last 200 years.  As was pointed out by one museum curator, those in the last generation (the Great generation of World War II) seemed to have more Continue reading

Alexander Westgarth is Wine a Stable and Lucrative Investment?

Fine Wine InvestmentIs Wine a Good Investment?

Alexander Westgarth of Westgarth Wine Investment Brokers Believes the Right Wine Investment is a Very Smart Market Play.

Their are so many wines on the market nowadays. There is no shortage of wineries in the United States or abroad and so many highly rated wines and even more lower rated wines.

Shelves and shelves of 2 buck Chuck and $7.99 to $12.99 specials from all sorts of diverse wineries and companies that seem to rely on cool names and bottle art rather than particularly quality wine.

I have to say that I had little or more like, no knowledge of the wine investment industry. I do have some friends in the industry and had heard stories of wine fraud that cost some investors a lot of money…

So like most I believe I really had no concept of what the industry was all about.

Enter Westgarth Fine Wine Brokers… I get a chance to speak with Alexander Westgarth who is a fine wine broker of 10 years and only deals with a very small, high quality group of fine wines. Alexander believes that the smaller fine wine market is a safe and stable investment market that can be entered relatively easily and can provide good and stable returns for the investor.

It was great getting to speak with Alexander who sheds much light and information on an industry that claims quite high returns even through some of our worst financial times and recessions.

At any rate, this is a wonderful glimpse into a word few know about and there is enough information here to start to find out if this type of investment may be right for you. – JW

Some of the questions we talk about…

  • What constituents a fine wine?
  • How much of a return can I expect on my wine?
  • How long should I keep hold of my wine before selling it?
  • What happens when I want to sell my wine?
  • What guarantee do I have that I’m getting what I paid for?
  • What’s the minimum investment I can make?
  • How are you different from other US fine wine investment companies and funds?
  • Is this kind of investment completely tax free?
  • Can I drink my wine?
  • How will I know when to sell?
  • Does wine ever go down in value?
  • Where are my wines kept?

QUOTES ABOUT FINE WINE AS AN INVESTMENT

“Wine is one of the last great commodities in the world to be dragged out of the dark ages and traded on a global index.”

Claer Barrett, The Financial Times, December 5, 2011

“Fine wine is also a better investment than equities and commodities… Wine not only managed to weather the recession and the stock market crash, it thrived in comparison with the others.”

Jeremy Gaunt, Reuters,   March 1, 2011

“Liv-ex’s Fine Wine 100 Index, the London International Vintners Exchange tracks the price movement of the world’s 100 most sought after wines.”

William Lyons, The Wall Street Journal, September 19, 2010

“… a performance analysis of fine wine since 1950 indicates an average annual return of 15 percent.”

William Beck, Financial Times special report, May 20, 2008

“Keeping fine wine stored in a quality cellar like Corsham can add as much as 20 percent come auction day.”

Jamie Merrill, The Independent. January 13, 2012

Ghostwriting Conference in Long Beach

Ghostwriters and writers interested in making a career in ghostwriting have their first ever conference.

banner ghostwriters unite

Ghostwriters Unite! is the world’s pioneering conference for ghostwriters. Held May 3-5 at the Hilton in downtown Long Beach, GU! will bring together some of the best people in the book industry including publishers, literary agents, authors, distributors, eBook specialists, and—of course—ghostwriters.

Ghostwriters Unite! is the first conference of its kind: an international gathering to share ghostwriting experiences and expertise and discuss the future of our profession.

How did this pioneering event get its start?

Ghostwriters Unite! is the mental baby of Claudia Suzanne, the first person to ever deconstruct (Secrets of a Ghostwriter) and teach (Ghostwriting Certificate Program) how ghosts do what we do.

Ghostwriters Unite! was originally envisioned as an afternoon event, a chance for Suzanne’s alumni  to meet and mingle with each other, their former teacher, and other industry experts.

But so many people got excited about the idea of getting together and talking about “professionalizing” our field that it’s grown into a full-blown conference!

We’ll be talking about setting fee standards and ethical boundaries and bylines and problem clients and working with agencies and publishing options and lots more.

If you’re a ghostwriter or are even thinking of getting started in this lucrative, recession-proof field, this is the one event you won’t want to miss!

The conference takes place May 3, 4, and 5, 2013 at the Hilton Long Beach & Executive Meeting Center, 701 West Ocean Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90831.

We’ll start with a Friday night mixer, then a full day of panels on finding clients, setting fees, handling the trust issue, maintaining voice, and other ghostwriter-specific topics. We’ll take a break at lunch with a keynote speaker and enjoy a limited-space banquet dinner with a special-guest author. We’ll finish the conference Sunday morning with an extended-panel discussion about the state of the book industry.

Get more information:

Ghostwriters Unite http://ghostwritersunite.com/

Come join me at this conference. Yes I will be there helping out Claudine and meeting all the wonderful authors and other industry leaders.

I can not stress enough how this conference may be one of the most important in the industry for those that want to make a living writing. – JW

SYSTEMS DESIGN: STILL TRYING TO GET IT RIGHT

banner james carlini - Carlini's Corner

By James Carlini

Systems design has come a long way.  Or has it?

Taking various organizational procedures and applications and automating them has been going on for over four decades.  Next-generation systems have been selected and implemented more than once or twice in those four decades.  Millions, if not billions, have been spent on computers, data centers, developing and training personnel, and software applications.

Initial attempts were focused on getting a software program in place and getting people to adapt to the automated system.  A lot has happened since original systems were developed, yet basic design concepts and comprehensive testing to insure quality still seem to be Continue reading
