Marilu Henner Supports Alzheimers Association on Celebrity Apprentice
Marilu Henner is best known for her role in Taxi, but she also a producer and author of Total Health Makeover and she supports the Alzheimers Association and PCRM.
Big fans of the show Taxi will remember Marilu Henner as the beautiful Elaine O’Connor Nardo. I like most of my peers were probably in “Celebrity Love” with Marilu.
So when I got a chance to interview her at Night of 100 Stars on Oscar night I was excited.
Marilu is still as beautiful as ever and you can tell from this clip, very easy to talk to.
Marilu thank you for your time, for all you do for Alzheimers Association, PCRM and for the warm shout out to the US Veterans you gave us. – JW

Alzheimers Association
- Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases.
Learn more: What We Know Today and Understanding Dementia.
- Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, although the greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. But Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of old age. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early onset Alzheimer’s (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s.

The Alzheimer’s Association provides supportive programs and services to help people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers deal with the disease and its impact on their lives. Each chapter in our nationwide network offers the five core services described below. In addition, some chapters offer special programs such as assistance to individuals with Alzheimer’s who live alone, people living with early-onset Alzheimer’s, rural and/or multicultural outreach, care coordination services, and training programs for families and professionals.
Core programs and services

Chapters maintain updated information on home care, adult day care, care coordination, assisted living, skilled nursing facilities, eldercare lawyers, financial planners and transportation. Staff and trained volunteers can help assess whether a specific care provider meets the individual needs of a person with Alzheimer’s.

- 24/7 Helpline for local referrals
- Chapter Web site resources and links
- Access to resources at the Association’s Green-Field Library
- Portfolio of publications about Alzheimer’s disease, caregiving, financial and legal matters

- Assessment of needs

Support groups — Peer- or professionally led groups for caregivers and others dealing with Alzheimer’s disease are facilitated by trained individuals. Many locations offer specialized groups for children, individuals with early-onset and early-stage Alzheimer’s, adult caregivers and others with specific needs.
Safety services — Chapters promote and encourage people with Alzheimer’s to enroll in MedicAlert® + Alzheimer’s Association Safe Return®. When a person with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia wanders or has a medical emergency, the chapter provides support to the family and assists law enforcement.
Education — Chapters maintain a variety of educational materials (brochures, videos, audiotapes, and books) on topics related to Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Topics include basic information about the disease, getting a diagnosis, communication techniques, home safety tips, choosing a residential care setting, caregiving experiences and activity programming. Educational programs address the specific interests of the general public, individuals with the disease and their families, and health care and social services professionals. Chapters also provide customized speaking engagements on request. Some educational programs offer continuing education (CE) or continuing medical education (CME) credits.

Marilu Henner
Marilu Henner has starred on stage, in several hit TV series, films, commercials, television movies and specials. She has co-starred with some of Hollywood’s leading men and worked with some of the best directors in Hollywood and on Broadway.
Marilu started her professional acting career starring in the first national touring company of Grease, later appearing with the Broadway company. This was followed by Over Here, Pal Joey, and later in Social Security directed by Mike Nichols.
Marilu worked on the TV show Taxi, with Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Tony Danza, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Conaway, Carol Kane, and Andy Kaufman. Later she worked on Evening Shade, side by side with some of the most talented actors around; Burt Reynolds, Charles Durning, Elizabeth Ashley, Michael Jeter, and Hal Holbrook. Finally she converted her ease as a talk-show guest into adeptness as a talk-show host with the Marilu show. Steering the project by relentless curiosity, she undertook issues to explore them, not to exploit them.
As executive producer of the Marilu show, Marilu formed a production company. Its first project included Medicine Ball, an offbeat Fox series, and critically acclaimed ABC Movie of the Week, Abandoned & Deceived, which told the true story of Gerri Jenson, the founder of ACES, an organization which helps trace “deadbeat” dads and moms.
Marilu and Jenson also testified in Washington DC, to support congressional legislation to combat the problem. After seeing the positive results of her support and presence, she starred in another film, Fight For Justice: the Nancy Conn Story. With this project she hoped to shed light on the issue of women who are stalked and battered.
Braiding together her skills, experiences, and resources; Marilu discovered a deep and satisfying role using her entertainment arena. Again using the image of the whole system, she set her eye on worldwide social problems.
This makes sense considering she is the mother of two boys: Nicholas and Joseph. With her second pregnancy she hosted a documentary called We’re Having a Baby. The camera followed Marilu through out her pregnancy and more specifically from a guest spot on Comic Relief to her four a.m. delivery just a few hours later. And believe it or not, even in labor she keeps her comedic timing.
